RAMOT at Tel Aviv University Ltd. posted this:A novel behavioral bioassay for preclinical testing and characterization of CNS agentsOur team, including zoologists, statisticians, and computer scientists have developed a new hi-res bioassay for preclinical testing and characterization of CNS agents, extracting key animal-centered parameters of behavior via computerized tracking and measurement of free exploration. The features that distinguish our system and method from other existing systems and methods are: elaborate data preparation for analysis and a methodology that secures replicability of results across laboratories, and exposes active management of kinematic variables. Our measured parameters are carefully designed, animal-centered building blocks of behavior. They are selected on the basis of an in-depth understanding of the mouse’s functional world. These quite unexpected and unusual parameters reflect the animal’s cognitive and emotional state and its information processing capacity; therefore they are most prone to be affected by drugs that act on respective CNS structures that mediate these states. Unlike all other existing systems we expose and quantify the rich and highly organized developmental dynamics of self regulated behavioral growth. The dynamics of this process before and after genetic manipulation and/or pharmacological treatment can now be readily measured by our system, articulating the effects of potential CNS drugs on behavioral growth and decay processes. This procedure requires mild reaction conditions and affords excellent levels of conversion and selectivity to obtain pure ε-caprolactam. No reaction by-products are formed. The new promoter salt is cheap, no corrosive, and easy to prepare. All these characteristics makes the procedure suitable for undustrial purposes.

An ELISA-based system that exploit circulating protein biomarkers found in this medium is more convenient to the patient compared to a more invasive lung biopsy. The researchers have found that high levels of serum hepatocyte growth factor (sHGF) protein in patients with SCLC shows clearly predicted for shortened survival and an incremental risk for death. HGF is a natural ligand for the oncogenic epithelial transition factor (c-Met) transmembrane tyrosine kinase receptor and serum HGF could be predictive of individual responses to new anti-cancer drugs: the Met inhibitors. The Met inhibitors are targeted therapies against c-Met receptor that are currently in development for the treatment of other neoplasms and are planned to be evaluated in SCLC. Therefore, a biomarker of prediction of response to these new Met inhibitors would be crucial for correct selection of patients for the clinical trials. Incorrect selection through other biomarkers in NSCLC has leaded to lack of benefit from these drugs in already performed phase 3 clinical trials, stressing the relevance of correct patient selection

Fundació URV posted this:A robust breast cancer computer-aided diagnosis systemWe analyze breast cancer in mammographies, ultrasonographies, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and thermographies. Our analysis includes mass/normal breast tissue classification, benign/malignant tumor classification in mammograms and ultrasound images, tumor detection in thermograms, mammogram registration and analysis of the evolution of breast tumors. We also quantify and visualize the evolution of breast tumors in patients undergoing medical treatment. While the previous works mainly focus on analyzing one type of breast images, we implement a robust CAD system for detecting, classifying and studying the evolution of breast cancer. This CAD system analyzes breast cancer in several types of medical images. To implement our CAD system, we use computer vision, pattern recognition and machine learning methods. We also need to collect a large scale breast cancer dataset from hospitals. This dataset should include mammograms, ultrasound, thermograms and MRI images for the same patients. Our CAD gives accurate diagnosis results because it gathers information from different sources.

The central piece, made of light material, makes it ideal for absorbing the mass of air, acting as a loading buffer. The openings in the central body of BrisAire are arranged in rows across the surface. Its particular provision aims to create an effect of irregular distribution of air flow in the room, preventing its impact directly and uniformly on the people in the room. Once placed on the air conditioning, the element standing by on the off position, it reassembles a paper bag, attached to the air conditioning by its wider sides, and the other two sides being unfastened. When the air conditioning is turned on, BrisAire will inflate releasing some air through the openings in its body and the rest via the unfastened side to the casing of the air conditioning. The openings and the two free sides, prevent the return of air to the equipment, which could cause defects in the efficiency of the apparatus. To prevent the air from the air conditioning impacting directly on the people in the room, BrisAire has larger openings on the top side which points upwards, while the smaller openings are found beneath.
