This coating prevents the bacterial adhesion and the subsequent biofilm formation that usually leads to host bacterial infections difficult to eradicate and control with the antibiotics currently in use, namely in hospital environments. This coating can be applied in a cost effective way to a broad range of materials through the application of a universal glue.

The membranes are produced by an electrospinning process in aqueous solution from mixtures of water soluble polyacids and polyols, which are subsequently stabilized by a thermal curing process and post-functionalized by the incorporation of amino-terminated dendrimers by a grafting process using a coupling agent. The material can be applied to the treatment of drinking water, to the regeneration of waste water, to the treatment of process waters and also to the controlled release of active substances, such as drugs, food preservatives, etc. The group seeks companies from the pharmaceutical, food, material technology and environmental sectors to sign technical cooperation agreements, commercial agreement with technical assistance and patent licensing agreements.

Thus, this new approach may benefit not only stroke patients who can be treated with current treatment to induce recanalization (transient stroke) but also the 80% of patients who could not benefit from current therapies directed to induce recanalization of the artery (permanent strokes). Results in the preclinical area and some results obtained in serum of stroke patients lead us to think that apotransferrin is a good neuroprotector in the early stages of the ischemic event.

Silicon nanocrystals have been widely investigated for several years because of their many interesting properties and potential use in several applications. Recently, silicon nanocrystals have been used in solar cells and light emitting device (LEDs). Silicon is an environmentally friendly material and is utilised for various applications in the field of electronic materials. The field of silicon nanocrystal production has grown enormously of late, in response to the observation of quantum confinement in porous silicon. Silicon is already widely used in the semiconductor industry, in large part because of its nontoxic properties and abundance, being the second most abundant element in the earth’s crust. Due to the high capacity of silicon paired with its relatively environmentally friendly properties it is an ideal material for use as a replacement to more commonly used environmentally costly materials. The common process of producing silicon nanocrystals can be classified into three distinct areas: solid-state reaction, liquid state reaction, and vapour state reaction. The solid-state reaction is the process whereby a thin film of SiO2, Si3N4 or the like containing excess Silicon (Si) is formed and subjected to heat treatment to enable the condensation of silicon and subsequent formation of silicon nanocrystals in a SiO2, Si3N4 or SiC matrix. In the liquid state reaction, silicon nanocrystals are prepared via a chemical reaction of silicon compounds, this is done through the application of variant methods, for example the high-temperature supercritical method. In the vapour state reaction, silicon nanocrystals are prepared by passing a silane compound gas through a high energy region such as laser or plasma. In the case of all three traditional silicon nanocrystals reaction methods (solid, liquid and gas) the process incurs significant cost due to the substantial need for heat energy and expensive deposition equipment. What’s more, in the liquid State reaction issues arise due to the severe difficulty in controlling particle size, which in turn leads to poor crystallinity quality. The vapour state reaction incurs further issues due to the extreme use of energy resulting in aggregated nanocrystals and the formation of secondary particles. To overcome the inherent issues of solid, liquid and vapour silicon nanocrystal reactions non-thermal plasma, such as inductively coupled plasma (IPC) has begun to be used. However, the conventional ICP-based apparatus has limitations and can result in issues pertaining to the management of the particle size of silicon nanocrystals, as well as extending reaction time and deteriorating silicon nanocrystal quality. To combat the aforementioned limitations in silicon nanocrystal production a new apparatus method has been designed, which can minimise plasma diffusion inside the reactor during production using ICP to improve the particle size characteristics and quality of the silicon nanocrystals.
Sandra Moczulska posted this:Application and method of producing cyclic compounds in olefin metathesis reactionThe olefin metathesis reaction has many advantages, the most important of which is the fact that it shortens the synthesis path by reducing the number of required steps and this lowers the cost of obtaining the target product. Unfortunately, the industrial application of the olefin metathesis reaction (especially in the production of macrocyclic rings in the RCM reaction) is currently experiencing difficulties such as: - lack of selectivity and product competition (a major problem with RCMs leading to large macrocyclic rings to minimize the problem of high dilution, but it clearly increases the cost of the process) - displacement of reaction equilibrium (RCM reaction is an equilibrium process, so to move the process towards the formation of products it is necessary to react under reduced pressure) - migration of double bond C = C (migration within the substrates as well as target product due to side reactions. This inconvenience can be eliminated by using, for example, quinones - unfortunately, this elimination is only partial.) - the need to use a homogeneous ruthenium catalyst (a large amount of catalyst is required to reach the reaction, reaching over 20 mol%). The present invention relates to a process for the production of cyclic compounds in the olefin metathesis reaction and the use of ruthenium catalysts for the production of cyclic olefins in olefin metathesis reactions. The solution through optimization, overcomes the current problems. The expected product is obtained with high efficiency and selectivity. The method can find extensive use in organic synthesis, requiring metathetic ring closure (RCM), among others in the fragrance industry. Advantages of the presented solution from UW: 1. high process efficiency 2. high selectivity 3. low cost of synthesis

Assessing ecological risk from pollutants requires preliminary research into the emission and transport of contaminating substances in the environment and the exposure to which live organisms may be subjected. Likewise, laboratory and/or field experiments help evaluate the toxic effects caused by different pollutants and exposure patterns. Finally, the results of these studies are combined to calculate the likelihood of ecosystems being affected by the use of potentially toxic substances.
