A novel behavioral bioassay for preclinical testing and characterization of CNS agentsOur team, including zoologists, statisticians, and computer scientists have developed a new hi-res bioassay for preclinical testing and characterization of CNS agents, extracting key animal-centered parameters of behavior via computerized tracking and measurement of free exploration. The features that distinguish our system and method from other existing systems and methods are: elaborate data preparation for analysis and a methodology that secures replicability of results across laboratories, and exposes active management of kinematic variables. Our measured parameters are carefully designed, animal-centered building blocks of behavior. They are selected on the basis of an in-depth understanding of the mouse’s functional world. These quite unexpected and unusual parameters reflect the animal’s cognitive and emotional state and its information processing capacity; therefore they are most prone to be affected by drugs that act on respective CNS structures that mediate these states. Unlike all other existing systems we expose and quantify the rich and highly organized developmental dynamics of self regulated behavioral growth. The dynamics of this process before and after genetic manipulation and/or pharmacological treatment can now be readily measured by our system, articulating the effects of potential CNS drugs on behavioral growth and decay processes. A Pack of a Routing, Fault Tolerance and Sizing Method for Dynamic WDM Optical NetworksThe technology corresponds to a set of three technologies that incorporate a least-cost routing method, a fault-tolerance method, and a wavelength dimensioning method for dynamic WDM optical networks with wavelength continuity constraints. The first technology corresponds to a routing method for a dynamic WDM optical network that has wavelength continuity constraints, and that aims to determine the set of routes that allow transmitting to each user in the network. The method is more efficient than existing methods, in terms of the number of wavelengths, and due to the fixed routing strategy used, its implementation is simple, and its online operation is very fast. The second technology corresponds to a method for determining the set of additional routes, called secondary routes, which are used to keep each user connected in cases where any set of simultaneous link failures occur. In addition, the number of wavelengths available on each link in the network is calculated such that the probability of blocking each connection is less than a predetermined threshold (which is a network design parameter), despite the occurrence of any set of simultaneous links. The third technology corresponds to a method for implementing an optical WDM network with wavelength continuity constraint that is based on a definition of a policy for assigning wavelengths to each network connection and on a calculation of the number of wavelengths in dynamic optical WDM networks with wavelength continuity constraint.

A prognostic and predictive serum biomarker in Small Cell Lung CancerPeripheral blood and its components (serum, plasma, and circulating cells) is an easily accessible fluid. An ELISA-based system that exploit circulating protein biomarkers found in this medium is more convenient to the patient compared to a more invasive lung biopsy. The researchers have found that high levels of serum hepatocyte growth factor (sHGF) protein in patients with SCLC shows clearly predicted for shortened survival and an incremental risk for death. HGF is a natural ligand for the oncogenic epithelial transition factor (c-Met) transmembrane tyrosine kinase receptor and serum HGF could be predictive of individual responses to new anti-cancer drugs: the Met inhibitors. The Met inhibitors are targeted therapies against c-Met receptor that are currently in development for the treatment of other neoplasms and are planned to be evaluated in SCLC. Therefore, a biomarker of prediction of response to these new Met inhibitors would be crucial for correct selection of patients for the clinical trials.
