Prognostic biomarker in COVID-19 patients.Non-invasive method to predict the clinical deterioration of patients with COVID-19, based on the study of the mRNA expression of a gene. The sample is taken from nasopharyngeal exudate, which offers two advantages: it is non-invasive, and it improves sensitivity (the primary impact of the virus occurs in the upper respiratory tract). The method allows results to be obtained quickly and affordably by RT-PCR, a technique widely used in the health sector.

Project: Innovative pilot production modified compounds by PE125 standard for multifunctional applications.Producing PE125 using GRAFTALEN™ MP-UHHD. Consumer properties, which should be taken into consideration: 1) The unique toughness of the material (the highest rate of all known polymers), namely, Over 160 kJ/m2 2) High abrasion resistance 3) Low friction coefficient (self-lubricating) 4) High resistance to chemically aggressive reagents (media) 5) High creep resistance (geometric stability) Ordinary way - This type of process is quite expensive. Production of PE125, in compounding with bimodal PE100, from 8 to 45% of supermolecular polyethylene is injected, reaching dispersion by multiple compounding (4 stages) in an extruder cascade (XXXXX technology). GRAFTALEN™ MP-UHHD (alloy) is a MELT-PROCESSABLE concentrate of UHMWPE on an HDPE matrix. As HDPE, you can choose the most affordable HDPE (pipe) grade. To obtain polyethylene according to the standards PE125 (with a minimum strength indicator MRS> 13.8-14 MPa, in comparison PE100 has MRS only 10 MPa), a significant improvement in the resistance against hydrostatic pressure is required. For a conventional bimodal HDPE, this indicator is difficult to achieve, since it directly correlates with the impact strength/density indicators and with simple extrapolation, it turns out that the required indicator for PE125 simply does not reach the bimodal HDPE matrix. Another problem - the difficulty in maintaining the geometric stability of the pipe (the thickness at the top of the pipe is often less than at the bottom) due to the sagging effect (the phenomenon of the gravitational flow of a polymer melt). This phenomenon is more pronounced for thick-walled pipes. The specific blend of HDPE with UHMWPE allows solving these problems above.Maximilian Betz posted this:

Prosody Based Speech AnalysisA major part of human communication is conveyed through intonation, or prosody – the music of speech. It is the least conscious, most instinctive activity of speech conveying all non-verbal linguistic information including sentiment, emphasis, conversation action and a large variety of signals: whether we are happy, irritated or even truthful can be detected through the way in which we utter the words. Remarkably, this aspect of communication has not yet been analyzed in a comprehensive, quantitative manner. A group of researchers from the Weizmann Institute of Science has created a model for analyzing prosodic patterns that enables access to non-verbal communication in speech, based on computational analysis of intonation-unit modulation. The model relies on a segmentation method that adds a compact layer of basic algorithmic analysis within a speech recognition engine, adding very little computational load. This provides the basis for universally describing prosody and grants access to non-verbal information in speech.Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla posted this:

Protein coupling using cystein-free inteinsTraceless covalent modification of proteins, including joining peptides or adding chemical groups, is extremely useful for numerous applications in chemical biology, protein chemistry, and biotechnology. A powerful tool currently used rely on Inteins, protein domains that auto-catalyze peptide bond formation. However, since inteins contain cysteine in their catalytic site, the reaction can only be made under reducing conditions, thus limiting the scope of proteins that can be modified. Prof. Pietrokovski and his collaborators at the University of Münster developed cysteine-less inteins that efficiently modify proteins under native and physiological conditions. They demonstrated their use with a full-length IgG antibody, an Fc fragment of an IgG, and nanobodies.Maciej Lojewski posted this:

Pure white light emitting nanomaterial: NanoliteBackground Consumers and industry are seeking safe, durable, energy efficient alternatives to traditional incandescent light bulbs as this traditional form of lighting continues to be phased out (Europe started 2009, Canada in 2012). CFLs are energy efficient however they contain mercury, a toxic substance that requires special handling for disposal and in the case of bulb breakage. LEDs are a safer, longer lasting alternative to CFLs, however manufacturing White LEDs is a rather complicated and expensive procedure. Pure materials (molecules or semiconductors) generally emit light in a narrow range of the visible spectrum making the design of white light emitters very challenging and costly. Currently, “white” LEDs are created by first creating a blue LED and then applying an additional coating containing a mixture of different phosphors to create an approximate white appearance. These LED’s use costly substrate material (i.e. sapphire). Another method of creating a white LED is more complicated and involves combining red, green, and blue LEDs to approximate a white light.CSIC - Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas posted this:

Pyridazin-3(2H)-one Derivatives as Selective Inhibitors of Monoamine Oxidase-B Isoform (MAO-B)This invention is concerned essentially with pyridazinone derivatives substituted at C4, C5 or C6 with dithiocarbamate fragments that are selective MAO-B inhibitors, and their use for the preparation of medicaments for treating disorders resulting from MAO-B hyperactivity, including neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson´s and Alzheimer’s diseases and other dementias. The pyridazine ring is a privileged fragment found in compounds with very different pharmacological properties, such as antihypertensive, antiplatelet, anti-inflammatory, antinociceptive, antidepressant, hypoglycemic, antiinfective or anticancer agents, many of them being pyridazin-3(2H)-one derivatives. The pyridazine ring is also included in polycyclic compounds acting as MAO-B inhibitors. However, simple pyridazin-3(2H)one derivatives have not been described so far as selective MAO-B inhibitors. The present invention provides novel pyridazin-3(2H)-one derivatives substituted at C4, C5 or C6 with several dithiocarbamate moieties that selectively inhibit the MAO-B activity and whose structure is unrelated to those currently available. Innovative aspects and advantages The novel pyridazin-3(2H)-one derivatives can be easily synthesized through a multicomponent reaction, in which the appropriate 6(5)(4)-bromoalkyl analogue, an amine and carbon disulfide react in the presence of anhydrous potassium phosphate at room temperature. The compounds of the present invention were inactive against MAO-A. However, these simple pyridazinone derivatives are inhibitors MAO-B with IC50 values in the micromolar range. Commercial applications and potential users The compounds of the present invention or their salts could be used by the pharmaceutical industry for the preparation of medicaments to treat disorders resulting from MAO-B hyperactivity, including neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson´s and Alzheimer’s diseases and other dementias.Peter Mogyorosi posted this:

Qfrency Text-to-Speech (TTS)The CSIR has developed a software product that converts digital text into synthetic speech, in all the 11 official South African languages. Up until the development and commercialisation of the CSIR’s Qfrency Text-to-Speech (TTS) product there had been no other text-to-speech product in the market that could deliver synthetic voices in all 11 official South African languages. Ten of South Africa’s official languages have been classified as resource-scarce, where resources in this context refers to digital language resources (text as well as speech) and research resources (research into linguistics). CSIR researchers have, in the past 18 years, developed capabilities to work with resource-scarce languages and adapt state-of-the-art techniques in text-to-speech, for the South African context. The CSIR’s Qfrency TTS technology overcomes the language barrier for users in government or business looking to reach a wider audience. The technology generates synthetic speech that is as close to human speech as possible, including articulation and accent. “We have progressed with our research and development of deep neural network (DNN) voices to the point that this technology presents a major leap in the naturalness of the synthetic voices that employ these DNN techniques. The next step in the Qfrency TTS development is to port this research and development into our commercial offering, thereby giving our customers access to the latest advances in this technology,” says CSIR senior engineer Aby Louw. The current focus of commercialisation efforts is the business-to-business sector, focusing on large-volume users such as call centres in telecommunications companies, adding speech channels to chat bots employed for self-service applications by large corporations and adding a speech modality to online learning platforms.Meghan Meyer posted this:

Quantum Imaging with Undetected PhotonsYou are working in the area of methods of imaging, spectroscopy or photometry? Then the new method of quantum imaging with undetected photons („QUIP“), developed at the university of vienna, is exciting for you. It allows to take images from objects without the need of detecting the light, being scattered from the object. This is achieved by first splitting up a primary beam of photons into two separate beams of entangled photons having different wavelengths. The two split-up beams are now themselves splitted up into two quantum-entangled split-up beams of different wave-length, whereat each one of these split-up beams of second generation has a wavelength of one of the split-up beams of the first splitting up. The split-up beams of first and second generation having the same wavelength are now merged and superposed so that their photons are now no longer distinguishable from each other. Due to the entanglement of the „combination-beams“ being acquired this way and having different wavelengths from each other, the behaviour of the photons of one of the beams can be determined by measuring the photons of the other beam – while both combination-beams, being entangled with each other and having different wavelengths. The object which is to be investigated will be illuminated with one of the combination-beams and the other combination-beam will be „analysed“. By doing so an object is being illuminated with one wavelength and the detection of the „result“ of the illumination will take place at another wavelength. Hence, the method is based upon the emission of photon pairs from two coherent SPDC processes and spatial correlation within the photon pairs. The image is developing as interference pattern in one of the two beams, whereat the object is illuminated by the other beam. It is not necessary to detect the „object-beam“, because its behaviour can be derived from the „detection-beam“ at a different wavelength, due to their entanglement with each other.
