In vitro method for detecting tumor growth and diagnosing or prognosticating the risk of metastasis in a human subject that has been diagnosed with uveal melanomaProblem to solve: Uveal ocular melanoma is the most common primary ocular malignancy in adults, with an incidence of approximately 7 cases per million inhabitants per year. Its incidence is therefore not very high, but it is a disease for which there are has been no alternative for more than 50 years. In addition, the American Cancer Society has published an increase in the incidence, having been diagnosed only in the United States 2,730 new cases in 2014. By the year 2018 there are anticipated 3,540 new cases in the USA. According to www.cancer.gov, the database of the National Cancer Institute of the USA, the age-adjusted average incidence of uveal melanoma in the United States is about 4.3 new cases per million inhabitants, without a clear variation related to latitude. Men have a higher incidence than women (4.9 vs. 3.7 per million). The age-adjusted incidence of this cancer has remained stable since at least the first years of the 1970s. Incidence rates in the United States are low compared with the rates of other reporting countries, which range from 5.3 to 10.9 cases per million. Part of the variation may be the result of differences in the inclusion criteria and calculation methods. Innovation: The present invention provides an in vitro method for detecting tumor growth and diagnosing or prognosticating the risk of metastasis in a human subject that has been diagnosed with uveal melanoma, wherein the biological sample is treated with a lysis agent capable of disrupting the membrane of the exosomes prior to determining the expression of the melanocyte protein PMEL/ME20-S/gp 100. This method incorporates new techniques that differentiate it from the potential competitors in several aspects. Our method is non-invasive (as it does not require a tumor biopsy), it does not require specific training and sampling is included in the hospital routine (blood extraction). Besides, it can be used after the application of the treatment, allowing not only to monitor the tumor advance and the early development of metastasis but also to help monitoring the effect of the treatment. In addition, it would be a more economical method.Universidad de Granada posted this:
In vitro method for the diagnosis and/or prognosis of malignant melanomaA group of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) related to the risk and aggressiveness of malignant melanoma has been identified. Thus, an in vitro method based on these biomarkers identification is proposed for diagnosis and/or prognosis of malignant melanoma and, additionally, to determine whether these patients respond adequately to treatment. In the same way, it has been proved with in vitro and in silico expression assays that the proposed SNPs for risk and aggressiveness of malignant melanoma are reinforced.CINBIO posted this:
In vitro method for the diagnosis or prognosis of neurodegenerative disordersThe diverse etiopathogenesis and the absence of biomarkers that can be used in the diagnosis of neurodegenerative and neurological diseases make difficult a correct diagnosis and treatment. Achieving a biomarker that helps to make the correct diagnosis and select the appropriate treatment for each patient in the less possible time is crucial for the patient’s complete recovery. The present invention is focused on the provision of a panel of biomarkers elected among LRP proteins of fragments thereof. It is proposed an in vitro method for the diagnosis or prognosis of neurodegenerative disorders based on new fragments of LRP (LRP1 and LRP2) in a biological sample, wherein if the level of expression of the concentration of the LRP fragment is significantly lower or higher (depending on the neurodegenerative disorder) as compared with the level measured in healthy controls, this is indicative that the subject is suffering the disease or has a bad prognosis. The proposed biomarker and a new nanosensor for the detection of the fragments in biological samples through Surface-enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) technology for the diagnosis of Major Depression in a early stage have been validated in a cohort of patients.Nerea Alonso posted this:

In-vehicle detection of distracted driving using mmwave radar technologyBackground Distracted driving is a serious problem that can lead to fatalities. Identification of distracted driving is commonly performed with machine learning methods using cameras. The use of cameras is invasive and requires significant amounts of processing power to be performed in real time. Additionally, current solutions lack the ability to rapidly calibrate to different operators. Mmwave devices require smaller data input sizes, potentially allowing for rapid calibration of devices before use, in addition to being non-invasive since no optical data is recorded. Mmwave devices also generate a 3D scattered image of the interior of the vehicle, which gives more spatial information than optical imaging, which generates a 2D image, potentially allowing for more precise classifications given more identifiable information.

Indoor 5G wireless transmission over powerlinesBackground To provide the best 5G service, wireless service providers deploy Centralized Radio Access Networks (C-RAN) in which digital baseband processor units (BBUs) and their associated remote radio units (RRUs) are detached from each other and are connected by a fronthaul transport fiber-optic link. 5G signal has limited indoor coverage due to its high frequency and therefore, multiple RRUs must be deployed in a building for indoor users. Providing indoor 5G access for apartments in a building where there are no fiber infrastructure in place is therefore a major challenge.University of Porto posted this:

Industrial production of humic and fulvic acid from biomethan digestateAnaerobic digestion is a process able to degrade organic waste to methane using a diverse microbial community. However, not all organics present in the feedstock can be biologically degraded and the undegraded fraction are disposed to fields or incinerated. This fraction, called the digestate, is underexploited and represents an interesting source of humic substances as they remain undegraded during the AD process. Our solution consists of a series of process to extract and concentrate those humic substances, specially fulvic acid. The first step is the mechanical separation of the liquid and solid phases. Then the liquid fraction undergoes a serie of filtration to remove inorganic precipitates, large particules and impurities. Then the concentration is done by reverse osmosis where the water is removed, and the humic substance solution retained. This technology allows a recovery of 60% of the humic substances in a solution containing at least 50% of fulvic acids. Further concentration steps can be done if necessary to obtain a solution with a minimum concentration of 12% w/w.

Inertial NEMS for Nanosensor Applications Based on Inorganic NanotubesInertial sensors for motion detection are being incorporated into an increasing number of portable devices, including diverse IoT applications, mobile phones, wearable electronics, automotive systems and medical diagnostic sensors. The current size reduction trend in electronics, requires incorporation of reliable nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS) into nanosensors, yet market applications of NEMS are currently limited by high costs of fabrication and inconsistent quality. A new technology developed by a group of researchers from the Weizmann Institute, provides a unique, highly reproducible structure for inertial nanosensors, with high durability at the nanoscale and with a detection mechanism based on the piezoresistive effect. The invention further extends application opportunities of extremely small portable electronics, which, with the increasing use of spatial awareness in reduced size electronics and IoT, is expected to witness increasing market demand.Jorian Bos posted this:

Inhibitory Proteins for 20S Proteasome Regulation as Cancer TreatmentProteasomal protein degradation is crucial in maintaining cellular integrity and in regulating key cellular processes including cell cycle, proliferation and cell death. The 20S proteasome can function as an independent degradation machinery and tight regulation must exist to control its proteolytic capacity. Despite the major importance of 20S proteasome regulation only a small number of regulators have been identified to date. Here, we discovered a novel family of inhibitory protein - CCRs (Catalytic Core Regulators) that specifically regulate the 20S proteasome, and not the 26S counterpart, and increase its effectiveness in cancer treatment.Mohammed VI Polytechnic University posted this:
Ink for Anti-Counterfeiting security applicationsA novel photoluminescent ink has been formulated by synthesizing Eu(FAC)3Phen as a red luminescent down-shifting emitter and employing SrAl2O4:Eu, Dy as a long persistent green phosphor. Both emitters are incorporated to design a photoluminescent ink with binary emission under a single UV excitation wavelength, where a red light is emitted when exposed under 325 nm, subsequently becoming green upon the UV light being switched off. The concept presented here is unequivocally distinct from the classical dual-mode emission, which requires a second extra near-infrared excitation around 980 nm to produce a binary luminescence.CSIC - Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas posted this:

Innovative and efficient antifungal composition for pharmacological (human &veterinary treatment), phytosanitary and cleaning (detergents) applicationsThis technology aims to help controlling resistant strains of important filamentous fungi and yeast fungi (e.g. Candida spp.) originated after prolonged treatment with currently used antifungals. The present invention provides for these purposes: a) The use of novel antifungals (COS and chitosan). b) The combined use (synergical) with existing antifungals (e.g. fluconazole) to reduce their doses. c) The use of COS and chitosan (alone or in combination with existing synergical antifungals) with an inhibitor of ARL1 gene to increase the sensitivity of fungi (including yeast) or their chitosan oligosaccharides (COS). Several experiments carried out have shown the significant synergistic effect of the combination object of the present invention (chitosan or COS, and an inhibitor of ARL1 gene or a currently used antifungal such as fluconazole) in inhibiting growth of filamentous fungi and yeast. Chitosan and COS are non-toxic for mammals, and therefore, they have a particular interest to use them as antifungal agents in some applications.
