Universidad de Alicante posted this:Novel procedure for polymeric foams with various applications from waste plastics.The research group "Processing and Pyrolysis of Polymers", Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Alicante has developed an innovative process that allows recycling of different types of plastics (EVA, polyethylene, polypropylene, polyurethane, polymer melt, foam, rubber or any combination thereof) to transform in a simple and economical ways products with applications in various industrial sectors. The group is looking for companies interested in acquiring the technology for commercial exploitation. Innovative aspects The inclusion of waste plastic (EVA, polyethylene, polyurethane, polypropylene, polymer melt, foam, rubber, etc. Or any combination thereof) in the composition, permits its recycling in a simple and cheap, and that current procedures are difficult and very expensive. Together with a chemical foaming and dispersion of ferrites in the composition, applies the energy necessary for the cohesion of the materials by microwave. Ferrites dispersed in the mixture capture and transmit microwaves heat required for foaming in every part of the obtained mass. With this new procedure, getting pieces of great uniformity, stability and thickness that determines the user (up to 25 cm. in diameter) at a low cost and quick way.
Universidad de Alicante posted this:Novel self-expanding polyurethane foams intended for inert filling of pleural and other human cavities.The Adhesion and Adhesives Laboratory of the University of Alicante has developed a new polymeric foaming material for in-situ filling and sealing of internal irregular different shaped human cavities, intended for patients suffering chronic pleural cavities and in-field injuries caused by bullets or accidental event leaving open blood vessels. The new foam is composed of two separate liquid components that can be mixed in a two-body syringe in such a way that the foaming time can be modulated for allowing the foam formation at the end of the syringe needle. The new polymeric foam can self-expanded and self-modelated for avoiding complications in open internal cavities caused by infections, blooding, fistulae, dyspnea or sepsis. The new foam is easily applicable, safe for biological tissues, and its use avoid the use of the current aggressive treatments in pleural cavities. It is looking for companies interested in acquiring this technology for its commercial exploitation.

This procedure allows a precise estimation of the symbol timing offset (STO), and a coarse estimation of carrier frequency offset (CFO). The procedure is based on the inclusion of symmetric extensions in the transmitted symbols for the synchronization, which makes it useful not only for communications systems based on the discrete Fourier transform, but also for transceivers based on the discrete cosine transform (DCT). Among its main applications are communications through single-mode optical fiber, powerline communications, wireless and wireline systems, and in general, all the techniques that use multicarrier and single carrier modulations. They can also make use of sonar images or adding structured light to the environment in order to analyze defects and shapes in products. The figure shows an image obtained by means of a range camera that allows distinguishing an object by its depth. Thus, its position and defects can be determined through its volume. The technology is totally developed and has been laboratory and field tested, although, it requires a particular specification for each case. The technology can be used for real-time inspection of production processes, both for the recognition and for the classification and quality inspection.

We provide a drug-free self-treatment therapy that helps people improve their sleep by changing behaviours and adjusting bed-sleep environment connection. It is based on a scientific method known as "Cognitive Behaviour Therapy for Insomnia" (CBTi). During 2 months, the patient is guided by a chatbot called "Sonia". Daily, Sonia teaches sleep techniques and monitors the patient's sleep and habits. During the treatment users have a community to connect to peers to share experiences and help each other on this sleep improvement journey and can be accompanied by their health care professional via technical reports. What differentiate us from other alternatives is that we are cheaper than alternatives (10x-100x less expensive) and we maintain frequent interactions with user, optimizing people behaviour change. It is also healthier and more sustainable then using medicines. Our preliminary results (soon to be published in a scientific paper) show that people that follows our therapy increases total sleep time by 79 minutes and reduce time to fall asleep in 30 minutes. Those results are better than most medicines and in-person therapy. Other studies suggests that improving sleep via CBTi also improves depression, anxiety, menopause, cognitive performance, and overall well-being.
