University of Vigo posted this:Procedure for the extraction of biosurfactants contained in corn steep liquorsNowadays, most of the pharmaceutical and cosmetic products in the market contain chemically synthesized surfactants in its composition. In many cases, these surfactants are the same as those used in regular cleanup activities. In order to get more natural and biocompatible products, it would be interesting to include natural surfactants instead of chemical surfactants in the preparation of these pharmaceutical and cosmetic products. These biosurfactants are also present in the formulation of greener nanoparticles, replacing the chemical surfactants currently used in the preparation thereof. Most biosurfactants have antimicrobial activity, which would improve the properties of certain nanoparticles, as well as many pharmaceutical and cosmetic products. The main disadvantage of biosurfactants industrial production is related to the high cost compared to chemically synthesized surfactant production. The solution proposed by the Chemical Engineering research group at the University of Vigo, is the development of eco-friendly simple extraction of biosurfactant from a corn wet-milling industry byproduct, such as corn wash liquors, better known as "corn steep liquor (CSL)", which could compete in terms of cost production with its chemical counterparts.

This method allows the preparation of enantioenriched polysubstituted proline derivatives after a three-step sequence. These prolines are widely used for multiple purposes, but the most important activity is based on the high efficiency against the hepatitis C virus. The administration of these drugs in mammalians is beneficial because the risks of the multiple side effects are reduced and the required dose is very small, unlike the mixture of the pharmaceuticals employed in the current therapy. This research group asks for companies ready to acquire this methodology for a future exploitation. Innovation features: At this moment, this methodology is the unique dealing with the production of these antiviral agents in an highly enantioselective manner. This enantioselective synthesis is very reliable, reproducible and allows to react very bulky starting materials giving high chemical yields. This method is a clear example of the atom economy.

So far, the only method for meat foodstuff treated with heat (ELISA method) is slow, very expensive and its results are semi-quantitative. This new method is faster, cheaper and the results are reliable and quantitative. It means a huge improvement for the daily analysis and quality control of these products.

The material does not rot, is re-generable and ecological. In the present invention the preparation of the adsorbent, its pre-activation, carbonization and application to eliminate the color of textile wastewater is disclosed. The color elimination from textile wastewater, as well as decrease of salts, total suspended solids, chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total organic carbon (TOC), is carried out passing the textile wastewater through a column filled with the prepared adsorbent. In batch systems metals dissolved in water can be eliminated.

The briquettes obtained, show physicochemical characteristics similar to the conventional and they have a high energy density being able to be used as fuel for thermal power plants or industrial boilers. Production of PE125, in compounding with bimodal PE100, from 8 to 45% of supermolecular polyethylene is injected, reaching dispersion by multiple compounding (4 stages) in an extruder cascade (XXXXX technology). GRAFTALEN™ MP-UHHD (alloy) is a MELT-PROCESSABLE concentrate of UHMWPE on an HDPE matrix. As HDPE, you can choose the most affordable HDPE (pipe) grade. To obtain polyethylene according to the standards PE125 (with a minimum strength indicator MRS> 13.8-14 MPa, in comparison PE100 has MRS only 10 MPa), a significant improvement in the resistance against hydrostatic pressure is required. For a conventional bimodal HDPE, this indicator is difficult to achieve, since it directly correlates with the impact strength/density indicators and with simple extrapolation, it turns out that the required indicator for PE125 simply does not reach the bimodal HDPE matrix. Another problem - the difficulty in maintaining the geometric stability of the pipe (the thickness at the top of the pipe is often less than at the bottom) due to the sagging effect (the phenomenon of the gravitational flow of a polymer melt). This phenomenon is more pronounced for thick-walled pipes. The specific blend of HDPE with UHMWPE allows solving these problems above.
