Seeking novel technologies for multiphase gas separation to enhance waste heat recovery during dehydration processesDehydration is routinely employed as a cooking process by the food and beverage industry. It uses significant amounts of energy and results in substantial lost heat to the atmosphere in the form of vapor clouds. The presence of atmospheric air, up to 30% by mass, in the air-steam reduces the possibility of waste heat recovery. As a non-condensing gas, it remains in a thin insulating layer at the condensate surface; this layer increases the partial pressure of the air and considerably reduces the heat transfer efficiency between the waste heat (steam) and any recovery medium. Separating the air from the steam significantly enhances the waste heat recovery opportunity. We wish to improve their waste heat recovery systems by implementing innovative technology to separate the desirable waste steam from the air-steam mixture.

Seeking novel technologies to deliver high energy efficiency and low sound air movement to industrial heat rejection equipmentWe are seeking to identify technologies that can deliver improved energy efficiency and lower sound emissions to their industrial heat rejection equipment. The primary focus is to greatly exceed the minimum energy efficiency goals established by the second tier of the European Union’s Directive 327/2011 guideline https://eur-lex.europa.eu/LexUriServ/LexUriServ.do?uri=OJ:L:2011:090:0008:0021:en:PDF while providing industry-leading low sound performance, by ideally meeting or exceeding the 1.1.2020 efficiency levels listed in this working document: https://www.eceee.org/static/media/uploads/site-2/ecodesign/products/ventilation-fans/explnotefanreview20150430.docx For reference, the EU Directive 327/2011 guidelines establish minimum overall efficiency levels for the fan, electric motor, and driving arrangement assemblies. These technologies would support BAC’s mission of providing sustainable, high-efficiency cooling solutions while minimize the environmental impact of our highly energy and water efficient heat rejection solutions.PepsiCo posted this Technology Call
Seeking novel technologies to enable consumer promotions using existing packaging componentsPepsiCo is interested in new methods to delight and engage with regard to promotional activity using existing packaging components such as bottles, labels and closures. PepsiCo connects with consumers in a variety of ways, such as advertising and social media. On a more personal, individualized level, PepsiCo can also connect with consumers via QR codes on labels or via unique codes added to the underside of a cap. Driven by the unique coding, these under-the-cap (UTC) codes can provide access to product or promotional information or can provide entry into a contest. Once redeemed, unique codes will need to be prohibited from further redemption. In order to access the code, the consumer must first purchase the product and then open the container by breaking the tamper evident bands to access the unique code. Often, however, the UTC codes can be difficult to read using either the human eye or with a cell phone camera. The main challenge: the closure base color has little contrast when compared to the UTC text. This results in a decline in consumer engagement and participation. PepsiCo is seeking: 1. Systems or technologies that can deliver a more positive consumer experience by ensuring greater visibility and legibility to unique UTC codes 2. Alternatives to the traditional UTC codes by leveraging bottles, labels or closure technologies that still require consumer purchase of the product prior to accessing the unique identifier. While PepsiCo is primarily interested in technologies that are closer to commercial availability, early-stage solutions may also be of interest, provided a clear development pathway exists.BIC posted this Technology Call
Seeking Numerical simulation of the cold forming process of small metallic partsBIC is looking for advanced computer simulations that can accurately model the process of shaping small metal parts. Cold forming is a key step in the manufacturing of ballpoint pen tips, which poses technical constraints on the raw material such as low inclusion content and small dimensional variation. Numerical simulations have been identified as a promising tool to identify the most suitable tool geometry to perform the cold forming operation, allowing thus both to increase the tooling lifetime and to expand the materials compatible with it. The group has an extensive hands-on experience in cold forming but has not yet explored the use of numerical simulations in this context. By making the process less sensitive to the raw material characteristics, the group can broaden its supply sources, reduce the operating costs, and introduce new materials with a view to comply with the anticipated strengthening of safety regulations.Covid-19 Innovation Challenges by Innoget posted this Technology Call

Seeking organisations able to help scale up production of membrane distillation systems for deployment globallyWe are working with a developer and supplier of equipment for the sustainable supply of safe drinking water in remote areas. Many remote island communities or those in conflict areas do not have access to a consistent supply of fresh drinking water or a reliable energy source to allow water to be created where it is needed. There is therefore a need for technology to transform non-potable water (polluted, waste, grey, brackish or seawater) into safe drinking water. Reverse osmosis (RO) systems are currently used in large desalination infrastructure projects, but are unsuitable when access or power is restricted, or if supply is required in a short time-frame. Membrane distillation (MD) processes are increasingly being investigated as a potential alternative to RO for these scenarios. The process relies on the partial pressure difference (triggered by a temperature difference) between each side of the vapour-selective and hydrophobic membrane pores. These pores are larger than in RO systems, resulting in less pressure, and subsequently less energy required, which facilitates the use of resulting MD systems in remote, off-grid locations with renewable energy sources. The Procter & Gamble Company posted this Technology Call

Seeking partners / expertise in the sustainable processing of plant-based raw materials for oils/fats for the food industryWe are working with an established ingredients manufacturer supplying the food industry with a range of oils/fats and proteins. The production of these ingredients can require extensive processing, high energy consumption, and the use of large quantities of organic solvents (e.g. hexane), all of which provide environmental risks. The food industry and its supply chain currently faces the dual challenge of moving to more sustainable sources (requiring alternative sources of oils/fats and proteins that can provide similar yield/quality to products such as palm oil), whilst finding ‘greener’ methods of processing that don’t require the use of organic solvents and capital intensive processes. This shift to sustainable farming and processing is being increasingly demanded by more knowledgeable consumers keen to protect the environment and long term health of the planet and its occupants. The client has committed to extending and improving the sustainability of their operations and seeks innovative partners to enable this change.Odor Dumitru posted this Technology Call

Seeking partners to support the development and/or manufacture of bio-sourced oils, lubricants and fuelsWe are working with an established manufacturer of high performance industrial lubricants, greases and fuels interested in developing their bio-sustainable offerings. Mounting environmental and sustainability concerns has shifted significance towards non-technical criteria for the evaluation of lubricants, and there is growing demand for more sustainable options. Early offerings were biodegradable and non-toxic but often derived from petrochemicals. Newer bio-sourced lubricants are made from plant oils or biomass feedstocks. Depending on the base stock used, chemical and oxidative stability and corrosion resistance of bio-sourced lubricants can be an issue, but improvements can be made through chemical modification of the oil, or through the use of additive packages. Therefore, to support development of bio-sourced lubricants, there is also a requirement for additives compatible with bio-based base stocks that are themselves environmentally friendly.CABIER INSTITUTE, SL posted this Technology Call

Seeking Powder Sterilization TechnologiesWe are seeking efficient and effective technologies to sterilize powdered seasonings without impacting performance characteristics. The powdered seasonings provided to PepsiCo are often comprised of onion or garlic powder. The complete seasoning, or its component ingredients, have the potential for the presence of undesirable microbial contamination. Treatment of these powders by way of irradiation can be effective, however, this technique is not permitted without proper labeling in certain global regions. Given the large surface area of the powders in question, other methods of microbial eradication have typically been ineffective. We would like to identify potential technologies to remove microbial contamination without negatively impacting the physical attributes or flavor profile of the seasoning.
