Seeking Low temperature encapsulation technology systems for encapsulation of flavours / aromasThe company is an established manufacturer of FMCG (fast moving consumer goods) products incorporating a range of flavourings (e.g., fruit, herb, botanical or synthetic versions). Flavour molecules with high volatility and a low boiling point (e.g., esters and lactones) tend to evaporate from the product even at ambient temperatures, leading to loss of the desired flavour profile over time. To extend the ‘freshness’ and shelf life of these products it is desirable to protect and stabilise the flavour compounds through encapsulation. Some traditional methods of encapsulating aromas and flavours (e.g.,spray drying) require the use of high temperatures which can also lead to loss of volatile compounds and poor encapsulation efficiency. However, recently a number of alternative encapsulation approaches have been developed that operate at low temperatures, and are therefore suitable for use with volatile flavours / aroma molecules.

Seeking Materials &/or Technologies to replicate the functional properties of methyl cellulose (E461) in frozen food applicationsWe are seeking a clean label replacement that can replicate the functional properties of methylcellulose in food applications. Ideally this would be using a single material; but a combination of materials will also be considered. Methylcellulose(MC) E461 is a water soluble modified compound derived from natural cellulose. MC is widely used in food applications due to its multitude of functionality which includes thickening, gelling, binding, stabilising and emulsification. At room temperature it is stable in aqueous solution and will swell when mixed with cold water, producing a clear/opalescent colloidal mixture. Upon heating, MC forms a gel and has the unique property that this thermal gelation is reversible, returning to a viscous solution once cooled. Methylcellulose used in food production is typically supplied in powdered format, stored at ambient temperature. The powder is white/off-white in colour with a neutral odour and flavour profile. Dosage rate varies depending on the application but generally ranges from 0.5-5%. MC is used in a range of food applications including ice creams, dressing/sauces, bakery and plant based products. Whilst it has many application benefits, its modified nature and E number classification can have a negative impact on consumer acceptability and familiarity with ingredient declarations. Thus there is a gap identified to find a clean label alternative. Specifically, we are interested in: - A raw material(s) of neutral colour and taste - Preference for powdered format but others will be considered - Ability to replicate the multiple functions of methylcellulose - Ability to measure/quantify the functionality of methylcellulose

Seeking new biodegradable building blocks and technologies for green polymersIn Personal Care products, synthetic polymers (e.g. Polyacrylates) are mostly - but not exclusively - used as thickening agents. Already small quantities (< 1%) enable the formation of a gel network, which is most desired for the product handling and appearance, as well as the sensorial properties. Since most synthetic polymers are not biodegradable, they may fall under the scope of being a microplastic and could therefore be imposed to labeling in nearby future. This threat is most unwanted by personal care companies and their suppliers, which in turn results in a growing interest for green alternatives. Currently used biopolymers (e.g. Xanthan Gum, Cellulose, etc.) do not show the same performance as their synthetic acrylate-based counterparts. Same is valid for green polymers, which are based on biorenewable monomers (e.g. glycerol, sebacic acids, etc.). At the moment, the skin feel and the viscosity building properties of these bio- and green polymers do not meet the requirements of the broad market, and remain thus rather a niche product. Despite the huge interest of the industry in green alternatives, successful candidates are a rarity, due to numerous technical and commercial hurdles. It is therefore most important to find partnerships with universities, start-ups, or well-established companies, which may lead to the development of new biorenewable building blocks and technologies.

Such systems currently comprise of a varying combination of: prestressed (reinforced) concrete beams; aerated concrete building blocks; EPS (expanded polystyrene) / XPS (extruded polystyrene) infill blocks and EPS/PIR (polyisocyanurate) top sheets; and in situ structural concrete topping or reinforced concrete slabs with EPS bonded to the underside. These systems can be used in both domestic and some commercial applications to provide a weight-bearing, insulated, finished floor surface, and are supplied to building sites as pre-manufactured elements for easy installation.
