Sustainable Packaging Challenge – New Materials for Food (IfM Engage, Institute for Manufacturing, University of Cambridge, UK)SMAR3TS project partner IfM Engage is looking for innovative approaches to support the development and adoption of sustainable and regenerative food packaging solutions, with a focus on new materials and system-level integration. Food packaging is essential for food safety, quality and shelf- life, yet it is also a major contributor to plastic pollution, resource depletion and waste generation. While innovation in bio-based, biodegradable and recyclable materials is advancing rapidly, many solutions remain difficult to scale due to performance limitations, cost barriers, regulatory complexity and poor integration with food systems. Within the SMAR3TS project, this I3X focuses on moving beyond isolated material substitution and supporting regenerative packaging approaches that reduce environmental impact, minimise food waste and align with circular economy and sustainability objectives across food systems.

Upcycling agri-food waste through upscaling industrial applicability and business case modelling (UPC BarcelonaTech, Spain)SMAR3TS project partner - UPC BarcelonaTech and its R2EM research and innovation team at Barcelona Research Center in Multiscale Science and Engineering (CCEM Barcelona) are working on tackling the problem of agri-food waste, as well as refining, separation and purification technologies in the labs. The goal of R2EM team is to advance development of technologies towards technological and societal readiness and scalability. The Innovate3X (I3X) challenge (described here as a call to innovate solutions for resilience, restoration, and regeneration) invites research and innovation talent to contribute to the development of industrial pilots through secondments.
