Universidad de Alcalá-OTRI posted this:Risk management of the effects of solar activity: Device and procedure of obtaining in real time and high resolution, the Local Geomagnetic Disturbance at middle latitudes.The research team specialized in Space Meteorology within the Space Research Group of the University of Alcalá, has developed a device and procedure that, based on the measurement of the local geomagnetic field, is able to estimate the magnetic disturbance component associated to solar activity at middle latitudes. The determination of the magnetic disturbance component is especially relevant in cases of sporadic but explosive solar phenomena. From the perspective of the actual user, the present invention constitutes an essential element in the risk management of the effects of solar activity on vulnerable technologies, both ground-based and satellite-based (electric power, rail transport, terrestrial and positioning navigation systems, radio and satellite communication systems ...), increasing the capacities of public administrations, civil protection and emergencies and the companies themselves, in order to prepare a successful strategy for adverse conditions related to the solar activity. The group is looking for collaboration and/or commercial agreements with the Central Administration, Civil Protection, Critical Infrastructure, Electric Power companies, Rail Network, Oil pipelines companies, Gas Pipelines companies, Insurance firms, etc...

This system uses neutralization acid-base free energy for discharge process (use as battery), while charge process is performed by inverting previous reactions. The electrodic reactions are hydrogen evolution and oxidation reactions so no net hydrogen consumption exists. The research group is looking for companies interested in licensing the technology, developing R & D projects to optimize this initial idea and/or to adapt this development to their needs for a future commercial exploitation of the patent.
Fundació URV posted this:ELECTRE-H software package: a tool for data analysis and decision aiding with hierarchical criteriaThe ELECTRE-H Software Package implements two new methods for ranking and ordered classification decision problems considering multiple criteria structured into a hierarchy. The hierarchy of criteria is a tool that allows the decision maker to better organize the problem based on its domain knowledge and needs, decomposing the general problem into smaller sub-problems. Both methods follow the well-known outranking model and belong to the family of ELECTRE methods. The ELECTRE approach is inspired on the voting-like procedure based on the opinion of the majority but also respecting the minorities (by allowing veto power). The software available to use ELECTRE methods does not allow a hierarchical decomposition of the problem, but on a flat organization of criteria. The novelties of these two methods are the following: -It fully applies the standard outranking procedure of ELECTRE at all the levels of the hierarchy of criteria (concordance and discordance indices are obtained from the results of the previous layer and exploited at each node to generate new results). -The user will get a result (a ranking or classification) at each intermediate node of the hierarchy as well as the root (or overall) node. -Preference uncertainty can be managed at each node of the hierarchy with its particular discrimination threshold values. -Veto power can be given to the appropriate nodes in the hierarchy, to avoid compensation with the rest of related criteria. -Different scales of measurement can be used both in the elementary criteria and in the intermediate criteria. -For the case of sorting, simple IF…THEN… decision rules are used to define the categories. The novelty of the software ELECTRE-H is that it is the implementation of these methods given by the authors. This guarantees that the program is fully following the methodology proposed. Its main features are: -Clear and easy-to-understand user interface. -Data can be easily provided using an Excel file. -All the parameters of the model can be easily changed in the user interface. -The results obtained can be graphically displayed (i.e. partial pre-orders, rankings) and exported into a PNG image or text files. Also, the calculations of the results are provided in log files. -Additional statistical tools to compute correlations for different ranking and classification results on the same set of alternatives and hierarchy are available. -A distance-based statistical tool to compare partial preorders is available. -The “Simos revised procedure” to calculate numerical values for criteria weights is available. -Analysis of the results can be done at different levels of the hierarchy. -The software supports large number of alternatives and criteria. Also the structure of the hierarchy is only limited to be a tree (each node has a single parent). The software is designed to be easy to use while providing the full functionality required in these two methods.

The new material allows to accumulate a large amount of energy in the form of latent heat, the thermal conductivity is improved and, mainly, it eliminates the stability problems of the devices incorporating the material due to the small volume variations in the phase shift. The university is looking for companies in the field of cold storage systems, to assess the potential integration of this technology in existing commercial equipment and license the technology.

The process uses electrospraying technique to deposit a suspension of a carbon material over a collector. This method facilitates processing superporous nanostructured carbon materials due to its high efficiency and less complexities compared to conventional techniques. The electrodes obtained can be used in energy storage or analytical sensors in commercial devices.

Moreover it doesn't cause boiler corrosion. Consequently it improves boiler thermal efficiency and fuel combustion effectiveness. That means lower costs of heating. It also modifies soot to be biodegradable, prevents releasing soot-related pollutions and isn't harmful to human health.

The device acts as an electrical generator and is driven by environmentally-available mechanical energy such as ambient vibrations. Due to its flexibility and small size, it is of easy integration as power generator permitting the provision of full power autonomy to any wireless sensor node during its lifecycle into a network infrastructure following the philosophy “install and forget”. Industrial partners are being sought to exploit the existing know-how through a patent license agreement.

For reasons of typical maintenance tasks, often occur spills of fluids and lubricants transmissions machinery transforming the kinetic energy of wind into electrical energy which is sent to the network. These fluids to spill soiled the wind turbine tower. On the other hand, it must undertake periodical cleaning of wind turbine blades on them because remains of insects that collide with the blades are. These remains make the blade is losing its effectiveness. Furthermore periodic revision is necessary due to fatigue that are subjected to wind turbine blades forcing periodic visual inspections to prevent breakage thereof and therefore stopping the wind turbine. Researchers at the University of Burgos have developed a solution that perform such tasks without being necessary that operators should climb the tower of the wind turbine.
