Conductive cellulose nanocrystalsWaterloo researchers have developed a core-shell nanocomposite material comprising an intrinsically conductive polymer (ICP) polymerized on the surface of oxidized cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs). A range of ICPs can be used to produce these novel nanocomposite materials. One such ICP, Polypyrrole (PPy), when coated on oxidized CNC facilitates linearly and well ordered polymer growth that enhances the PPy/CNC nanocomposite specific capacitance beyond that of graphene and single and multi walled carbon nanotubes. In addition to superior specific capacitance performance, these PPy/CNC nanocomposites are printable and mechanically strong thus lending themselves to a wide range of electronics applications. Further, since PPy has the ability to reduce noble metals (eg. Ag, Pt, Au, etc) without the need for capping or dispersing agents, silver (Ag) nanoparticles were uniformly deposited on PPy/CNC to produce a Ag/PPy/CNC nanocomposite that was shown to impart good antibacterial (both gram positive and negative) activity.Unismart - University of Padua Foundation posted this:

Consensus-based image segmentation system and methodBackground Medical imaging is a vital aspect of modern health-care, with millions of images taken each year. Clinicians (cardiologists, urologists, oncologists etc.) and other health care professionals review these images in order to provide analysis and advice for diagnosis, treatment and palliation. It is a common task and activity in reviewing images to identify and delineate a segment of an image of interest. Such a segment may help to identify tumours, lesions, other regions of interest. It could also help pinpoint the location within the body of these regions of interest. Segmentation or contouring of a medical image is frequently necessary to provide patient diagnosis and prognosis, and to develop the patient care plan. Segmentation of images by radiologists is a laborious and time-consuming task which sometimes represents a significant bottleneck in providing timely patient treatment plans. Confounding this problem is the fact that significant radiologist interpretation variability can occur which can further impact patient outcomes.Creative Biolabs posted this:

Construction adhesives for anchoring in concrete and masonry substratesThe present invention relates to epoxy adhesives and vinyl ester adhesives for construction applications. They are characterized by high chemical resistance after solidification, very low primary and secondary shrinkage, also a short setting time at positive temperatures and a relatively short setting time at negative temperatures. The novelty in relation to commercial solutions is the composition of adhesives, which allows their application in temperatures below -10 C.

Construction procedure of vertical wells with interior claddingThe invention is about a method of constructing vertical large wells, which are excavated by bivalve spoons, and are composed with an inner cladding based on cylindrical rings of reinforced concrete. The invention is especially intended for the excavation of wells in soils with clayey or silty layers, which do not easily disintegrate and therefore make it difficult to lower the cylindrical rings which will form the inner coating or cladding.Peter Mogyorosi posted this:

Continuous Biooptical Monitoring of Microalgae CropsCurrent microalgae farming methods are challenged by biotic and abiotic stresses, which often induce irreversible damage, including sudden batch collapse. Available stress monitoring techniques suffer from low-resolution, high costs, and intermittence. Moreover, the time it takes for current methods to detect stress is often too long, resulting in extensive biomass yield losses. The proposed in-situ microalgae monitoring platform enables automated and continuous tracking of spectral cues indicative of environmental and physiological stress, allowing for early detection and intervention. The system promises to optimize resource culture protocols and ultimately secure enhanced and stable biomass yields at lower costs.Georgetown University posted this:

Control system that allows drones to flight autonomouslyResearchers from the University of Alicante have developed a control system, which allows a greater versatility in flight for UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles also colloquially called drones). With this system a vehicle can switch between different flight plans or define in real time the optimum aircraft movement depending on the environment and the information received by its sensors. Moreover, this system also includes a communication mechanism that allows a ground station to define new flight plans while the aircraft is in the air. This system is a significant advance over existing systems, as latter ones require prior planning to take off and have a reduced flexibility when the vehicles are in flight. It is applicable to all types of aircraft using the communication protocol MAVLINK.BSUIR R&D Department posted this:

In this way, when a link or other cause fails, and a path to a bridge terminal has to be repaired, this one informs the controller, sending a Packetln OpenFlow package containing the destination address to be repaired. Its most obvious application is in switches for Software Defined Networks (SDN). The group seeks to reach licensing agreements, commercial or of collaboration agreements with companies from the telecommunications sector, electronic devices and / or computer applications that establish the communications between transparent bridges.

Cortical Challenge and Recovery Test (CCaRT)Background The global Transcranial Magnetic Stimulator (TMS) market was valued at USD 883.38 million in 2018 and is anticipated to grow at a CAGR of 9%, reaching 2.1 billion by 2026. Increasing prevalence of neurological disorders (e.g., Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s disease) and psychiatric disorder (e.g., depression, anxiety disorders), along with increasing awareness about TMS among professionals are few factors driving this growth. TMS is the most adopted widely used method for brain stimulation. It is non-invasive and uses magnetic induction forces focusing on a particular area of the brain. Repetitive TMS (rTMS) is a type of transcranial magnetic stimulation that is expected to be the fastest growing segment since it has shown promising results for the treatment of various psychiatric disorder such as unipolar depression, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder.Daniel M. Covalent Chemistry Platform for Diagnostics and Drug DiscoveryDelivery and activation of drugs or probes is of great importance in therapeutics, diagnostics, and research. For instance, selective delivery/activation of anti-cancer drugs to tumor cells is crucial for their efficacy and reduced side effects. However, achieving site-selective delivery/activation is challenging and not always feasible with currently available chemical tools. The group of Dr. Nir London developed a chemical platform that uses covalent chemical inhibitors as a targeting system for releasing anti-cancer drugs and probes. This method can be harnessed for numerous therapeutic applications such as improving selectivity and reducing side effects of known drugs, as a platform for screening and development of new drugs, as well as for diagnostic applications and imaging tools.
