Multisilva: A web-based decision support system to support forest managementMultisilva is a web-based decision support system to support forest management. This software focuses on the assessment of ecosystem services provision and identifies the economic costs deriving from different alternative management scenarios. Multisilva has a Mapping Tool that supports the user in identifying ecosystem services hotspots located within the property and in its surroundings and hence integrating the provision of those ecosystem services in forest management and planning. For instance, it supplies the presence of habitats of protected species, drinking water sources or attractive areas for outdoor recreation. Once identified which ecosystem services should be enhanced and where, Multisilva offers a Simulation Tool to quantify and compare the impacts of alternative managements on the provision of ecosystem services (measure through biophysical indicators) and the direct and indirect management costs.

Multivariate times series pattern discovery in a complex continuous industrial processBackground A complex continuous industrial process contains a number of interconnected sub-processes or functional groups which are dynamically inter-related. They usually generate huge amounts of data during daily operations. While countless measurements and data are captured at varying time intervals across the entire process, there is remarkably little information that is used as a diagnostic or system evaluation measure on how well the plant is operating and in what ways the operations could be improved. In the past decade, pattern discovery has been employed in oil sands industries. However, it is essentially designed for static databases. When time-dependent data is involved, the fundamental requirement of pattern associations could not be easily satisfied since stationary characteristics could not be assumed and auto-correlation and cross correlation may change from time to time. These pose a very difficult problem for a dynamic systems.

Muscle Strength Measuring DeviceBackground Manual muscle-testing and the use of a dynamometer are the most common methods to measure muscle strength. Currently used methods of semi- and quantitative measurement of maximal muscle strength require subject cooperation and thus depends on engagement of tested subject. Measuring muscle strength may be an important component of physical training or nutrition evaluation and assessment. Descricption of the Invention The lack of quantitative data of muscle strength resulted in the development of our device. Our solution is objective dynamometry. The device works on the principle of electrical stimulation of the musculus tibialis at the motor point by a series of stimulation with increasing intensity. The maximum muscle strength and muscle fatigue are determined from the measured values using torque sensor based on tensometric measurement. This noninvasive approach enables appropriately investigating the characteristics of muscles and assess distribution of fast and slow muscle fibers. Our device is intended not only for sports medicine (effect of training and nutrition on athletes’ performance) and for athletes themselves, but also for intensive medicine (sarcopenia, coma, long-term diseases). We have developed a prototype of second generation according to regulations that are required to follow for devices of such type. Advantages Currently, the devices on the market are based on dynamometric principle engaging human will. Our device operates objectively independently of human will. Our device is mobile, simple and easy-to-use. Our device is a suitable tool to screen for sarcopenia and identify effective ways for preventive and therapeutic interventions and thus prevent the disastrous consequences of sarcopenia. Moreover, our solution offers technique that teaches athletes how to improve their health and physical performance.

MUST - Managing Urban Spaces TogetherMUST is an application aiming at fostering citizen engagement in urban planning design process. It relies on advanced interaction functionalities that enable to bridge the gap between the computational/optimization techniques handled by the urban experts on the one hand and the citizen participation in the design process on the other hand. Thanks to a flexible, dynamic, and iterative system, it accompanies urban experts in involving citizens in the early stages of an urban design project. More precisely, MUST covers and supports the dialogue and collaborative decision making during three interactions in the urban design process: -1st interaction - Capture of the citizens’ requirements in terms of needs and preferences (such as mobility, view, sunlight, noise, services…). MUST enables to classify the requirements in a participatory manner. After this prioritization, the system transforms them into quantified parameters and, through artificial intelligence, it processes them to transform them into exploitable inputs, in particular when dealing with correlated inputs. In this step of the early design process, MUST covers a direct participation process of the citizens. -2nd interaction - Diagnosis of the site and generation of an organization chart. After a first analysis of the selected site by the urban experts, a first diagnosis is provided to the citizens, as well as a continuous information exchange helping them to understand the decisions made. Thanks to the tangible interfaces provided by MUST, the citizens can collaboratively explore this diagnosis and then allocate the urban spaces in the selected site for the zone. Instant recommendations are being displayed on the tabletop whenever the allocated space does not meet with the requirements. This step of the design corresponds to the organization chart generation, a sketch-based task in traditional design process. -3rd interaction - Generation of the 3D building typology. In this design interaction, the experts are the main users of the system. Based on the requirements and on the organization chart set in earlier stages, the experts propose different scenarios. Each scenario is evaluated according to different indicators, including the indicators set by the citizens in early stage. This interaction enables a transparent design process where the end-users can evaluate and verify that their requirements are being considered. When relevant to meet citizens’ requirements, MUST also suggests solutions to improve the organization chart by proposing environmental features (such as wind, radiation, CO2 emission…) that are defined through optimization algorithms and machine learning. This application gives the possibility to designers and experts to focus on other creative aspects in the design while ensuring that the outcomes answer citizens’ requirements.

Nanocomposites for electrochemical supercapacitorsThe new materials have the following advantages over existing materials in supercapacitor’s sector: Supercapacitive properties: they have specific capacitance values much higher than those obtained by commercial nanostructured carbon electrodes. Low cost: obtained by a chemical process of a single stage, with a single precursor, at low temperature, and highly available, non-polluting and low cost materials. Good cyclability: testing in cyclability is promising in terms of electrochemical and mechanical stability. In parallel to its advantages as supercapacitors, the nanocomposites show the advantages associated with the following additional properties: Giant magnetoresistance, GMR: this property is observed at room temperature, and high magnetic fields are not needed. Source of carbon nanoforms: based on the nanocomposite, can be obtained a mixture of carbon nanoforms consisting of nano-onions and multi-walled nanotubes.Universidad de Alcalá-OTRI posted this:

NanoMEDIC gene editing delivery systemBackground Gene therapy holds great potential for the treatment of genetic diseases. However, delivery to specific tissues is still a major bottleneck. Although AAV-delivered CRISPR-Cas9 editing is being developed for multiple diseases, its therapeutic translation is hindered by the limited packaging capacity of viral particles and possible immune response to them. Moreover, AAV transgenes tend to be expressed for an extended period of time, which increases off-target mutagenesis risk. Extracellular vesicles (EV) is another option and, when combined with ribonucleoprotein (RNP) delivery of CRISPR-Cas9, reduces off-target effects. The structural polyprotein Gag is typically used to package cargo into EVs, which nevertheless limits the EV packaging capacity. The present invention is an all-in-one EV delivery system termed NanoMEDIC (nanomembrane-derived extracellular vesicles for the delivery of macromolecular cargo). It is a transient EV-based CRISPR-Cas9 editing delivery system which ensures efficient genome editing in various cell types.
