Green Cements, an innovative way to reduce clinker usage while reusing slagThe production of cement is vital for the economic development of any country, as it is a fundamental pillar of the construction industry. However, it is also one of the most polluting processes in the world, as evidenced by the fact that for every ton of cement produced, 1 ton of CO2 is released into the environment. On the other hand, the copper mining industry generates 2.2 tons of slag per ton produced. To put this into perspective, if a plant processes 1000 tons of copper slag, only 6% is transformed into copper, while the rest is disposed of in tailings, contaminating and affecting the lifespan of the mining plant. Our solution uses this copper slag to produce cement, thus reducing the consumption of clinker by 15%, while maintaining early-age compressive strength, increasing the durability of the mortars used, and all this while reducing the amount of CO2 emitted into the environment. Additionally, it allows for the reuse of a waste product from the copper mining industry.

Harnessing inhibitory RNA based- nanoparticles for therapeutic intervention in blood cancersModulating T cells functions by down regulating specific genes using RNA interference (RNAi) holds tremendous potential in advancing targeted therapies in many immune related disorders including cancer, inflammation, autoimmunity and viral infections. Hematopoietic cells, in general, and primary T lymphocytes, in particular, are notoriously hard to transfect with small interfering RNAs (siRNAs). Herein, we describe a novel strategy to specifically deliver siRNAs to murine CD4+ T cells using targeted lipid nanoparticles (tLNPs). To increase the efficacy of siRNA delivery, these tLNPs have been formulated with several lipids designed to improve the stability and efficacy of siRNA delivery. The tLNPs were surface functionalized with anti-CD4 monoclonal antibody (mAb) to permit delivery of the siRNAs specifically to CD4+ T lymphocytes. Ex vivo, tLNPs demonstrated specificity by targeting only primary CD4+ T lymphocytes and no other cell types. Systemic intravenous administration of these particles led to efficient binding and uptake into CD4+ T lymphocytes in several anatomical sites including the spleen, inguinal lymph nodes, blood and the bone marrow. Silencing by tLNPs occur in a subset of circulating and resting CD4+ T lymphocytes. Interestingly, we show that tLNPs internalization and not endosome escape is a fundamental event that takes place as early as one hour after systemic administration that determine tLNPs efficacy. Taken together, these results suggest that tLNPs may open new avenues for the manipulation of T cell functionality and may help to establish RNAi as a therapeutic modality in leukocyte-associated diseases. Some neurological disorders are manifested by weakness of the extensor muscles of the neck, which causes inadequate kyphosis in the area of the cervical and thoracic spine (dropped head syndrome DHS). Head and neck brace – a device made of a combination of plastic and aluminum and textile cover, which on the principle of a splint attached and fixed to the head and torso maintains an upright position of the head and neck and stability of the spine. The system of attaching the brace to the body and head is secured with adjustable straps and velcro fastener. The upright position of the head reduces the risk of inhaling food and at the same time allows the user to perform normal daily activities (reading, writing, working on a PC, watching TV). Our device is easy to handle, easy to maintenance and it offers the possibility of individual production, directly according to the user’s instructions. Prototype testing took place both in hospital environment and at home. The chin support collars used in practice stabilize the position of the head, but at the same time, they make it difficult to open the mouth and chew. The use of various positioning aids is also limited. Any other device that would ensure an upright position while maintain the ability to swallow and quality of life is not currently available on the market in the Czech Republic. Our device is intended for acute and follow-up care facilities, rehabilitation institutions, social care institutions and home environment.
