University of Vigo posted this:A novel mild and efficient method to prepare ε-Caprolactam precursor of Nylon 6ε-Caprolactam, the main precursor of the synthetic fibber Nylon 6, is prepared from cyclohexanone oxime by treatment with a new salt as promoter. This procedure requires mild reaction conditions and affords excellent levels of conversion and selectivity to obtain pure ε-caprolactam. No reaction by-products are formed. The new promoter salt is cheap, no corrosive, and easy to prepare. All these characteristics makes the procedure suitable for undustrial purposes.

As in the case of the heating with microwave radiation, electrical energy is transformed into thermal energy. However, on contrary of heating with microwave radiation (penetration depth of microwave radiation in absorbing media is limited) the penetration depth is virtually unlimited and the extent of heating is regulated only by the spatial uniformity of electrical conductivity throughout the reaction medium and the time spent in the ohmic reactor. Thus, the direct scaling of the ohmic heating for the pilot or industrial scale shouldn’t have the limitations presented by microwave radiation heating. It is also possible to reduce reaction times and increase the energy efficiency of chemical reactions

The invention also concerns the dendrimers’ procurement process and their biomedical applications, particularly as carriers of drugs or nucleic acids (such ODN, siRNA, dsRNA or DNA), or as therapeutic agents with antiviral or antibacterial activity. The group is looking for companies in the biomedical sector to reach licensing agreements, collaboration and commercial agreements with technical assistance.

The new extract contains a mixture of tannins and non-tannins which confers an improved antioxidant and light fastness properties. The extract also contains a colouring agent similar to that obtained with the Chestnut Tree extract. The main characteristic is the capacity to precipitate proteins and make them resistant to decomposition, for which reason the extract is useful as tanning agent for hides and skins.
