A novel mild and efficient method to prepare ε-Caprolactam precursor of Nylon 6 ε-Caprolactam, the main precursor of the synthetic fibber Nylon 6, is prepared from cyclohexanone oxime by treatment with a new salt as promoter. This procedure requires mild reaction conditions and affords excellent levels of conversion and selectivity to obtain pure ε-caprolactam. No reaction by-products are formed. The new promoter salt is cheap, no corrosive, and easy to prepare. All these characteristics makes the procedure suitable for undustrial purposes.

Non-Thermal Method for In Situ Regeneration or Cleaning of Activated Carbon An alternative chemical method for regeneration of activated carbon at room temperature consisting in the in situ combination of a diluted acid and two oxidants with a catalyst for the desorption and oxidation of pollutants previously adsorbed on carbon material. This so called CARBOX technology is less expensive than state-of-the art thermal regeneration of activated carbon since no energy input is required.

Ohmic heating reactor for chemical synthesis, the method and its applications In ohmic heating electrical energy is dissipated in heat with a very high efficiency (electrodes in contact with the reaction medium), resulting in fast and uniform heating and in the increase of charged species movement. As in the case of the heating with microwave radiation, electrical energy is transformed into thermal energy. However, on contrary of heating with microwave radiation (penetration depth of microwave radiation in absorbing media is limited) the penetration depth is virtually unlimited and the extent of heating is regulated only by the spatial uniformity of electrical conductivity throughout the reaction medium and the time spent in the ohmic reactor. Thus, the direct scaling of the ohmic heating for the pilot or industrial scale shouldn’t have the limitations presented by microwave radiation heating. It is also possible to reduce reaction times and increase the energy efficiency of chemical reactions

Biopolymer based micro- and nanoparticles A group of researchers from a Portuguese university developed a method for preparing new hybrid materials based on biopolymer and silica, in the form of spherical particles with uniform size and smaller than 1 micrometer for a number of applications in environmental and industrial areas. The method is also effective for coating nanoparticles of variable nature, with a thin shell (tens of nanometers) with composition identical to the hybrids. The materials have been successfully tested in the removal of chemical species in water at laboratory scale, in particular in the removal of organic pollutants dyes and pharmaceutical compounds. Other applications are being considered. The University looks for companies working in the environmental, pharmaceutical or biotechnology areas, or companies in the area of materials for licensing and / or future collaboration in developing new formulations and testing new applications.

The invention aims to control the color temperature of white light emission that is different depending on the morphology/dimension of the particles, on the surrounding environment and on excitation power. The advantage of this type of device is based on the high color quality index and the possibility of color temperature control that is relevant to the lighting technologies market. The group looks for licencing agreements and commercial or collaboration agreements with pharmaceutical and petrochemical industry, and those industries in charge of the fertilizer preparation and production of compounds for the treatment of environmental problems.
