Environmentally friendly procedure for the synthesis of aldehydes and ketones from diols/ Procedure for the oxidative cleavage of 1,2-diols using dimethyl sulfoxide as oxidizing agentThe oxidative cleavage of vicinal diols to the corresponding aldehydes or ketones is a highly useful transformation in organic synthesis. Traditional methods for carrying out this transformation encompass the use of lead tetraacetate or periodates, that show obvious disadvantages such as the high toxicity of lead tetraacetate and its use in stoichiometric amounts, that implies the generation as byproduct of big amounts of lead diacetate, also toxic. On the other hand, the use of periodates shows limitations in the scope, as ditertiary diols cannot be used. Therefore, a new method has been developed that uses as oxidant dimethyl sulfoxide, easily accessible and environmentally friendly, for the efficient synthesis of aldehydes and ketones by oxidative cleavage of 1,2-diols.

Enzymatic production of 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid from 5-methoxymethylfurfuraa a l l CSIC, University of Zaragoza and Technische Universität Dresden have developed an enzymatic composition and its use as an enzymatic cascade for the production of 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) from 5-methoxymethylfurfural (MMF). This cascade is self-sustained with the only consumption of atmospheric oxygen and the MMF itself. The method can be applied to the conversion of MMF into FDCA step in the bioplastic producing industry, switching from the current inorganic catalysts employed to the use of enzymes for the FDCA production. Exhaust gas treatment system using polymer membrane for carbon dioxide capture processResearchers at the Korea Institute of Energy Research have developed a carbon dioxide (CO2) capture process for treating exhausts gas using a polymer membrane. Carbon sequestration requires a multi-step procedure whereby waste CO2 from large point sources, is captured, transported to storage sites and deposited. Carbon capture is a critical step in this process and represents a significant portion of the overall cost. This newly developed exhaust gas treatment system for CO2 capture offers numerous advantages over existing technology including: reduction in environmental harmful exhaust gases from carbon capture process; minimisation of installation space requirements; and a significant reduction in installation costs. In recent years there has been an accelerated development of technology focused on the reduction of CO2 emissions, due in part to the increase of climate change mitigation focused regulations. Advanced carbon capture technology is at the forefront of research centred on the reduction of CO2 emissions. Prior commercialised carbon capture technologies have neglected to incorporate methods for handling the unavoidable harmful exhaust gasses present in the carbon capture process. Consequently, there is a need for methods of managing these gasses within the carbon capture process. Researchers at the Korea Institute of Energy Research have met this challenge and designed a sophisticated polymer membrane process capable of treating the harmful exhaust gasses present during common carbon capture method. This advanced technology addresses the necessity of managing these gasses and their known negative environmental implications. This newly developed exhaust gas treatment system for carbon capture offers numerous advantages over existing technology. Specifically, harmful exhaust gasses can be removed; installation space, of the desulfurization facility, can be minimized and process costs reduced through the application of exhaust gas treatment device using the polymer separator.

Exon skipping by CRISPR-Cas9 editing for Duchenne muscular dystrophyBackground Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a rare, severe genetic disease characterized by progressive muscle wasting. It is caused by mutations in DMD gene that prevent the production of the muscle isoform of dystrophin protein. The symptom onset is usually in early childhood and life expectancy is ~30 years. Elevidys is currently the only gene therapy approved for DMD, which is designed to deliver a gene coding for a shorter version of dystrophin. This approach was taken because delivery of the whole DMD gene is challenging as it is the largest human gene. Antisense oligonucleotide medications for exon skipping (exons 45, 51, and 53) to produce a shorter yet functional dystrophin gene have been approved, which require periodic administration. None of the drugs is suitable for all DMD patients. More treatment solutions are urgently needed.
