The invention consists in the design and evaluation of a functional ingredient composed of several bioactive compounds for the treatment of obesity and other metabolic syndrome-related diseases.
Functionality of this multi-ingredient has been tested in a cafeteria diet-induced obesity model. It has been shown that animals fed a cafeteria diet develop metabolic syndrome. The chronic administration of our multi-ingredient product reduces the effect produced by the consumption of cafeteria diet. Hence, a reduction of body weight, improvement of insulin and leptin resistance and endothelial function, a hypolipidemic, hypoglicemic and antihypertensive effect have been observed.
Nowadays, there are some functional ingredients to treat or prevent some aspects of these pathologies but the novelty of this invention is that the designed multi-ingredient product is able to act in several targets at the same time.
Description of the technology
The designed functional product is composed of different ingredients such as a grape seed proanthocyanidin extract, linoleic conjugated acid, an anthocyanin extract, and a hydrolysate from chicken feet proteins.
This functional ingredient has been tested through its daily oral administration to cafeteria diet-fed rats during 3 weeks. It has been observed that the daily administration of the designed product is capable of:
- Reduce body weight and adiposity without decreasing lean mass. This fact is due to the decrease of the weight of the adipose tissues without changing the number and measurement of the adipocytes.
- Improve insulin sensitivity
- Increase leptin sensitivity
- Exert hypolipidemic and hypoglycemic effect
-Decrease blood pressure and improve endothelial function.
In addition, it has been observed that it does not induce inflammation and ectopic lipid accumulation in liver and muscle after chronic administration.
Current development status
The prevalence of obesity and the metabolic syndrome is rapidly increasing in developing countries, leading to increased morbidity and mortality due to type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and cardiovascular disease. It is a problem because there is a lack of an effective treatment to obesity or metabolic syndrome. Exist drugs or functional ingredients to treat or prevent some of the individual metabolic syndrome-related diseases. However, the designed product could be used to treat several pathologies at the same time with one single product. The invention could be useful for the following applications:
Food industry: Manufacture and commercialization of the functional ingredient for the treatment and/or prevention of obesity and metabolic syndrome-related diseases for humans or animals. In addition, the development of this product implies a revalorization of by-products from the food industry due to the fact that, some of the ingredients used to elaborate it, are obtained from food industry by-products.
Nutraceutical industry: Manufacture and commercialization of the functional ingredient for the treatment and/or prevention of obesity and metabolic syndrome-related diseases for humans or animals.
Pharmaceutical industry: Commercialization of the functional ingredient for the treatment and/or prevention of obesity and metabolic syndrome-related diseases for humans or animals.
