The main aspect of innovation, which can be implemented in industrial practice, is application of degradable polymers, while maintaining the usable equivalence to current products. It is associated with a tendency to reduce environmental consumer waste. Specialized wound dressings are now one of the most profitable medical devices. Their variety of assortment and implementation of more niche application solutions demonstrate the ability of their wider application. It is assumed, that annual sales of specialized dressings on the markets in 2010-2015 will increase by about 4%.

Description of the technology

Scientists from Cracow University of Technology developed a new method of preparation of third-generation hydrogel dressings containing silver nanoparticles. Hydrogel wound dressings are the most modern generation of dressing materials, which differ significantly from traditional dressings, ensure the appropriate environment for healing, interact directly on the healing process, fulfill protective functions, create barrier to microorganisms, do not adhere to the wound, perfectly maintained in place assumptions, reduce the frequency of dressing change, lack of toxic effects and allergic reactions.

Specifications

Silver nanoparticles, which are contained in polymeric matrix, released slowly due to provide protection of wounds against microbial pathogens. Hydrogel wound dressings belong to III generation of dressing materials and they characterize by the following features: maintain of wound in the moist state, which accelerates the healing process, allow to painless of dressing change, prevent excessive the loss of body fluids and allow absorption of exudate with impurities. They are used in treatment of wounds with medium and strong oozing, in heal wounds (pressure ulcers, leg ulcer, diabetic gangrene) and in the case of burns and postoperative wounds. In recent years, the market of wound dressing materials is dynamically developing, and what's more it still has unpredictable great potential in relation to both the development of applied technology and its value increase. Projections of development relate to the traditional and modern wound dressings. Advanced dressings are the result of the technology development of the twentieth century, and they determine the future direction of progress in this area. The total value of the global market dressings is estimated at approx. 12-13 billion dollars per year. In the case of special dressings market, the leading market is European Union and the United States. Due to the low profitability of this assortment should not be changed within 10-20 years.
