The synthesis of silver nanoparticles suspension and nanosilver suspension in reductive system with urea for agrochemical and sanitary applications.

Summary of the technology

The main advantage of proposed technology is the presence of urea in the system used commonly as a fertilizer promoting the growth of plants and both antifungal and antibacterial activity against pathogens.
It also fits into the current trend towards the use of proecological technologies in industry. The resulting nanoparticles can be used in many industries, but the biggest potential lies in the agrochemical industry.

Description of the technology

Researchers from Cracow University of Technology have developed a new method of producing silver nanoparticles suspensions. The suspension of silver nanoparticles can be used in agriculture or other industries due to strong antimicrobial properties and the presence of urea used as fertilizer in the cultivation of plants.

Specifications

One of the main problems of modern agricultural production is reduction in yield losses caused by plant diseases, pests and weeds. Currently, it is mainly carried out by the chemical method using synthetic pesticides. In view of the withdrawal of the last few years numerous substances from agricultural practice, research try to find new products useful in combating plant pests safe for people and the environment. However, the current requirements for plant protection products caused withdrawal the use a number of active substances with high toxicity and possible negative effect on human and animal health and the environment. Looking for new and safe alternative for living organisms and environments , high hopes are associated with the development of nanotechnology. Among the new potential fungicides, particularly noteworthy is nanosilver with high biocidal activity. The possibility of the usage of silver nanoparticles in protecting plants against fungal plant diseases caused is mentioned in specialist scientific literature and several tests results prove such applications. Chemical plant protection still provokes discussions about the side effects of pesticides on the environment and their residues impact on human health. This is mentioned in the preamble to Directive 91/414 EEC, which says: "Protection of human and animal health, as well as the environment takes precedence over the improvement of agricultural production." The result is withdrawn from agricultural use a large number of active substances with high toxicity and poses a threat to human health and the environment. Consequently, new and safe products are looking for. High hopes associated with the development of nanotechnology in the production of fungicides. Especially useful may be products containing nanoparticles with a much higher activity than the same materials in macro scale and thus more effective impact on bacteria or fungi. The offered product is a synthesis method of silver nanoparticles suspensions by reducing the silver salt with a reducing agent in a system containing urea. The optimum concentration of the obtained nanosuspensions is in the range of approx. 500-1000 ppm.
