Summary of the technology

Animal free, wet lab models capable of simulating the processes of digestion, mucus permeation and epithelial absorption through the mouth, stomach, small and large intestine

Details of the Technology Offer

One of our industrial partners, a spin out from Newcastle University, is Aelius Biotech . It offers a range of predictive lab models of the human digestive and respiratory systems. These are animal free, wet lab models capable of simulating the processes of digestion, mucus permeation and epithelial absorption through the mouth, stomach, small and large intestine (for which they are developing a microbial component), and of modelling the mucus covered airway epithelia. By rebuilding mucus layers that can be combined with cell culture system, Aelius Biotech can model the mucus barrier, the epithelial layer and the luminal environment in a single system and explore microbial involvement. Their active digestion systems can be run in bulk volume with whole meals and formulations, or in miniaturised, high-throughput formats. These systems can be used alone or in combination to test drug delivery and absorption, screen and improve delivery formulations, develop and test functional foods and study pre- and pro-biotics.
