Details of the Technology Offer

New and innovative aspects

In basic computer classes, practical exercises on the components of a computer are not usually carried out (assembly-disassembly), due to the cost involved. This could result in a lack of basic knowledge (function and main characteristics of the components of a computer). To meet this need, the PC Virtual LAB tool has been created. The aim of this tool is to give students of technical degrees a better understanding of the function and main characteristics of the components of a computer and thus increase the success in learning basic computer skills in a very large number of students.

Opening a computer, removing components or replacing them with others involves a high cost, which is why this video game is a valuable tool. This video game allows the student to deepen this knowledge outside the classroom in an autonomous way.

The results of the validation of this educational tool show statistically the improvement in learning performance, comparing its use with other more traditional learning methodologies (visualisation on flat screens of the same software or a traditional classroom in which only the teacher has access to the inside of a computer).

Main advantages of its use

• It allows for increased success in learning basic computer concepts.
• It allows to deepen basic computer skills outside the classroom in an autonomous way.
• Provides basic computer skills.
• It provides a better understanding of the function and main characteristics of the components of a computer.
• It generates greater student interest and engagement compared to conventional learning environments.

Specifications

The main novelty of this tool is that it can be viewed both on computer screens and in Virtual Reality environments. This virtual reality educational game allows "doing" rather than just observing. Students can learn experientially and progress at their own pace. In addition, the use of virtual reality provokes greater interest and engagement compared to conventional learning environments.

Applications

The tool is specifically developed for students of basic informatics, mainly a young people. Although the main target audience would be computer science teachers who want to use this educational game in classes or to recommend their students to use it as a complement to what they have seen in class. Secondly, there would be students who wish to learn more about informatics concepts and finally, computer enthusiasts who are interested in the latest advances in computer science. Regarding entities, the tool is also aimed at educational institutions so that they decide to incorporate this game into their teaching methodology within the basic computer science programmes. Finally, there is another, more secondary target, which is the technological hardware and software development companies that want to cooperate in the development and improvement of this simulator in exchange for their brands appearing in this technology.
