EPIC Semiconductors (EPIC) is a fabless technology design firm founded in 2008 in Vancouver, Canada.
EPIC has developed a microscopic AI sensor chip (Smart Dust) featuring energy harvesting (this eliminates the use of toxic batteries) and bidirectional non-magnetic (RF-free) communication. Its small size allows it to be easily embedded into everyday objects, sensing “human actions, physical forces, chemical reactions and bio-effects”.
Why we do not like batteries?
Batteries contain chemicals and metals that are harmful for the environment. As they decompose in landfills they undergo a photochemical reaction which results in greenhouse gasses and global warming. The harmful chemicals in the batteries will end up in the water supply, damaging the health of people, micro organisms, animals and plants.
Why we are against RF-waves?
High frequency electromagnetic radio-waves are known to damage the DNA cells of living organisms (leading to mutations and the uncontrolled cell growth we know as cancer). Furthermore, wireless technologies provide rising pollution of microwaves (electro smog).
Unlike momentarily activated systems, Smart Dust is “always-on”. A plurality of these sensors creates a self-organized collision-free network, that acts like a “superorganism” which scientists believe is the next step in Artificial Intelligence.

EPIC’s proprietary technology doesn’t rely on third-party components, which makes it ultra-affordable (due to enormous cost savings) and therefore hard, if not useless to copy. It grants a superior market position and creates recurring revenues.
Mother nature builds any life form with just four genetic building blocks (ACGT). Smart Dust has about 50. Think of the possibilities; they are endless! Today’s logic devices are built of four basic elements: AND, OR, NOT plus flip-flops for registers, memory, counters, etc. You need billions of them to build a computer chip, the more the better. Microprocessors solve programs with logic, but they do not think, they are just smart-programmed. The industry tells us that it has to be like this, and that’s the reason that they all make the same product. Which is good news for us! Because, distinctively, we have made our Smart Dust: Smart By Nature; or as we call, Inherent Artificial Intelligence (IAI):
‘Inherent’ means that our Smart Dust does not require programming. Therefore, it does not need RAM/ROM which already spears a few billion transistors.
Smart Dust can “feel” and “learn” from changes that they interpret and communicate. The degree of intelligence (IQ) can be scaled from one to many Smart Dust units, all-working together for the sake of serving the user in endless applications. Such Smart Dust clusters can be spread around in an area, a room, a shop, a hospital, you name it!
