Summary of the technology
Telescopic intramedullary device for the elongation of long bones, mainly for patients with achondroplasia (1 in 25,000 live births), which has a motorized tight mechanism, that increases its length by request of the patient, without any physical connection to the device. For its self-supporting character the patient can walk while the effect of elongation and hardening bone happens.
New and innovative aspects
Surgical procedures currently employed to correct the effects from the disease or other facts, are generally traumatic and long lasting, meanwhile the patient has to be resting during long periods of time, with a low quality of life.
The proposed device allows progressive, self-supporting and autonomous prosthesis (incorporates a reducing micromotor inside the fixed cylinder, driven by the energy stored in the battery attached to the motor), it limits the risk of infections and allows a high control capacity of the elongated distance.
Main advantages of its use
- The patient only has a surgical operation for each bone.
- The patient does not need to be seated or in bed for long months, but has ability to move on their own legs that are in process of elongation.
- Ease of management mechanism regrowth by the patient.
The device comprises two coaxial cylindrical tubular elements with a longitudinal notch; so that the outer cylinder is fixedly attached by screws to one of the two parts of the bone to lengthen, and the sliding inner tube is attached at the other end by screws the other part of the bone. The outer tube has inside at their end, an accumulator of electric power or battery that recharges through electrical induction.
The chosen material is titanium alloy Ti6Al4V -ELI, bio-inert material, high corrosion resistance and high mechanical strength. Allows attachment of bone on the oxide layer overlying and a coating of "hydroxyapatite" to improve and accelerate bone anchorage.
The application of this progressive prosthesis focuses exclusively to medical or hospital sector and within this, to the section of traumatology.
