New method for the production of metallic oxides with spinel structure

Posted by Universitat de ValènciaResponsive · Patents for licensing · Spain

Summary of the technology

This procedure is faster, with lower energy consumption and generates purer spinels than known methods for spinel production. With this invention, it’s possible to provide new methods for obtaining spinels or other mixed oxides with a higher processability and versatility than those existing to date, allowing also for obtaining new spinels and removing the need for extremely costly phases in time or energy, including milling or heating at temperatures up to 1200ºC.

Description of the tech for sale

Metallic oxides with spinel structure have attracted great interest over the last decades because of the good behaviour of its physical properties and its high applicability. At industrial level, the synthesis of metallic oxides requires a previous grinding step and a high temperature treatment (over 1100 ºC) for a long time. Nevertheless, this procedure, like other alternative methods, has the disadvantage to need high energy consumption and long time and besides, produces final products with high degree of impurities. Researchers of the Institute of Molecular Science of the University of Valencia have developed a new procedure for the synthesis of spinels from water soluble precursors.

Specifications

It discloses new magnetic homo- or heterometallic polymers based on the oxalate ligand with a high water-solubility as well as procedures for synthesizing from them high-purity spinel-type metal oxides as well as other mixed oxides with structures other than the spinel type. The water solubility of the precursors gives a high processability to these molecular compounds, which allows for preparing nanostructures of these precursors and of the final spinels. This opens the way to new applications that cannot be obtained from the other molecular precursors known to date due to their high insolubility in all solvents.

Main advantages of its use

  • • Greater rapidity of the new procedure of spinel synthesis, as it is a simplified method without long waiting times.• Lower energy consumption during the heating treatment.• Another advantage of the injection layer is that it facilitates the preparation of the conductive polymer/electroluminiscent material group when a solution-based preparation technique is used. • High degree of purity of the produced spinels, being able to be offered as soluble inks.• Versatility of the method, since new types of spinels can be obtained.

Applications

  • • in ceramic industry, for the development of new pigments as ceramic water-soluble inks, because of the colour, purity and high temperature stability of the produced spinels• in electronic industry, for the development of electronic components (i.e. high density memories) by applying water-soluble inks in nanolithography
