SCALABLE PLASMA ACTIVATION SPRAY (PAS) PLATFORM

Summary of the technology

The Scalable Plasma Activation Spray (PAS) platform, developed at the University of Alberta, provides a high-throughput, continuous-flow solution for advanced water purification. By spraying water micro-droplets directly into a cold plasma field, the system rapidly captures short-lived active species to eliminate pharmaceuticals, industrial chemicals, and pathogens. Operating at ambient temperature and using only air and electricity, it achieves over 95% degradation of organic dyes in 6 minutes and complete ≥6-log pathogen reduction within 15–30 minutes.

Details of the Technology Offer

Featuring a patent-pending inverted gas-liquid transport architecture with multi-electrode spatial coverage, this platform fully overlaps the plasma field with falling droplets, boosting energy efficiency by up to 180%. Its tunable chemical selectivity allows operators to adjust droplet size and reactor geometry to target either nitrogen-centred species for agriculture or hydrogen peroxide for chemical oxidation.
