Details of the Innovation Need

Personal care devices are often used under wet conditions. In order to ensure a delightful use experience over time the entry of fluids in various parts of the device must be prevented. Particular in areas with moving parts and small gaps and overall limited space traditional (rubber based), assembled sealings are difficult to implement.

Requirements

  • The sealing need to allow the movable part a motion of up to ± 1mm at a frequency of up to 160 Hz, with minimum dampening to the system. The sealing must be durable for an operation time of at least 12 h. The sealing material must be safe for close human use, which can be ensured by food grade, medical grade or FDA-compliant materials. Furthermore, the material should be resistant against typical personal care products that are used in combination with the person care devices.

Possible solution areas

  • Possible solutions areas can include, but are not limited to, self expanding, high flexible foam or silicone gel adhesives. Already commercially available solutions which need minimal additional development effort are highly appreciated.

Discarded solutions

  • Materials without potential of release for human use or just ideas in fundament research state.
