Summary of the technology

The proposed invention discloses a system that allows the capture and inactivation of pathogenic biological agents in fluids (gases or liquids) by passing the same through one or more modulable and configurable treatment zones. The combination of the different types of zones, steps and stages, allow the device to be adapted for functions such as the capture of substances or organisms, inactivation of pathogenic agents, capture and inactivation of chemical substances, additivation, humidification, as well as other processes that require the passage of a fluid through different treatment elements.

Details of the Technology Offer

The system can be used as a test device to study the capacity of different physical and chemical treatments, as well as to analyze the times and contact surfaces required to capture and inactivate pathogenic biological agents in a continuous flow of gases or liquids, serving as a tool for its own definition and final consolidation on a case-by-case basis.

The system, in one of its simplest configurations, is capable of deactivating microorganisms in an air stream with 99.99% efficiency, including SARS-Cov-2. In the event of the emergence of new pathogens in the future, the device facilitates its own redefinition for the deactivation of such agents.

Competitive Advantage:

  • Inactivation of pathogens. The system presented not only captures pathogens, but also has the ability to deactivate them quickly and effectively, even in a continuous flow. This feature makes it a safe device when handling and maintenance in general for collective or individual protection of people who may be in environments with risk of contamination. The system, in one of its simplest implementations, is capable of inactivating microorganisms with an efficiency of 99.99%, including SARS-Cov-2.
  • Versatility. It is modular and configurable depending on the type of pathogens to be treated. Its adaptability makes it possible to analyze and determine the combination of the different types of treatment stages or zones so that the device can be adjusted to our requirements, thus making it possible to determine the tailor-made configuration needed to perform a specific function and subsequently consolidate it. Given its adaptability, the device can be used in fixed installations as well as in mobile or portable installations, depending on the size of the device required.
  • It allows a safe configuration through the use of reservoir and safety valves for pressure control, allowing for hospital uses the use of approved elements in direct contact with the patient and the possibility of use as a barrier between patients and inactivating agents by means of hydraulic seal and barrier with external elements. The pressure drop generated by the device can be zero or configurable by means of known and standardized pressure regulating valves.

About Universidad de La Laguna

The University of La Laguna (ULL) is the oldest institution of higher education learning in the Canary Islands and it is possible to trace its history back more than 200 years. It is a beacon for society in the Canary Islands that, using the Atlantic as a bridge, has stretched out its hand to the rest of the world. Currently, this public institution is home to more than 25,000 individuals who are either students, academic or research staff, or administrative staff and service personnel. The geographical position of Canary Islands in the Atlantic region places them between three continents, which means that, from a strategic point of view, the universities located on the islands are well placed to become important hubs of reference and flagships of knowledge, research and transfer in the Atlantic.
