Summary of the technology

Current technology

Current systems for measuring/monitoring respiratory movements (such as Thorax displacement) @ medical level, rely on one single technology: Inertial Measurement Units (IMU) aka "accelerometry". The resulting data of such measurements however are very often inadequate & hard or impossible to interpret.

Problem

E.g. the raw IMU-data output of coughing may look exactly the same as the raw IMU-data of riding a bike on really bumpy road ! When such type of confusion arises, it is impossible to distinguish between very different events.

Solution

A second sensor technology is added: a very thin, ultra-stretchable, very accurate displacement sensor.
This sensor is fixed to the body as a simple self-adhesive patch. The fixation is of such a high quality and "integrates" with the skin so thoroughly, that it is nick-named a "Second Skin"-sensor.

Together with the on-board IMU the "Second Skin" sensor forms a Sensor Fusion System. I.e. by cross-linking the raw data of two very different sensor concepts all uncertainties, "grey"-zones and impossible to interpret situations are eliminated.

The sensor-fusion concept also widens and multiplies the capabilities for capturing a multitude of different types of "body language/events"

Details of the Technology Offer

@ Bainisha we specialize in a novel sensor technology for measuring displacement at a level that has been hitherto unattainable. Since the outbreak we have suspended all our development tracks to concentrate solely on integrating our technology in apowerful Covid19 remote monitoring tool. In a nutshell our proposition is:

An on-skin wearable tele-health patch that can capture, map and report different types of coughing, sneezing, vomiting, heavy breathing/panting and other respiratory related parameters. The unique properties of the easy to apply patch is that it allows to identify an sharply distinguish between different types of "body language/events" with 100% certainty (which is not feasible with currently available systems).

Our system allows to track respiratory patients wirelessly (no contact) over a period of several weeks, without adding to the burden of their disease.

Additionally it also provides such parameters as:

  • medication adherence = did the patient use his/her puffer or other atomizing equipment as prescribed
  • heart rate
  • gait analysis → the patient's step counter and type of walking
  • body posture → laying down, standing, rocking and/or swaying etc.
  • sleep patterns
  • identify destructive habits such as smoking or inhaling (non-medical)

A more technical insight into the properties of the self adhesive sensor concept can be found in this LinkedIn article "How can Self Adhesive displacement Sensors - SA*Sensors - produce the highest quality data ?"

We are now looking for a world class partner to co-develop this solution. At least at the level of the hardware developments we can be ready for the second wave.

About Bainisha

Patrick Van De Vyver is the Principle of Bainisha cvba - www.bainisha.com - and they are into high-tech innovation with a focus on developing a technology platform based on a ultra-thin sensor film technology for measuring displacement. The company based in the Belgium -Lokeren and is focused on the worldwide introduction of a multitude of spin-of applications. Markets include medical applications (such as a respiratory early warning system fitted in a single-use self-adhesive patch.), heavy industry including military applications (such as deformation measurements caused by explosions) and sports & leisure industry (such as defining the 15°-rule in cricket & on-line drag management - air resistance - for speed sport such as downhill ski racing or bicycling). Other applications such as MOCAP in the film industry - especially capturing hand movements in high definition- have also been demonstrated.
The company was founded in 2014 & currently has a lead list including such companies as Johnson & Johnson, AstraZeneca, Roche, NATO etc) and 12 clients mainly for the introductory test-kit and some engineering projects.
Since the beginning we have been working with a multi-disciplinary development team on a free-lance base. This development group is located in Merelbeke (B).
Bainisha stands for a ground breaking new technology poised to shift the standards in many industries and disciplines. To this end all investments have been dedicated to prepare the market and launch & demonstrate operational prototypes both @ customer's facilities as during international trade shows. To date we have not generated any profit (other than the intangible assets of our design know-how & two patents).
