Real-Time Microwave Oil Detection System and Environmental Monitoring

Summary of the technology

Researchers at the University of Alberta have developed a real-time, self-contained, floating microwave sensing platform that autonomously detects hydrocarbon leaks directly on the water's surface. Traditional detection methods such as satellite imaging, manual sampling, and lab testing are often slow, weather-dependent, and labour-intensive. This patent-pending technology addresses these challenges by offering continuous, low-power surface monitoring that wirelessly transmits alerts in under 500 milliseconds. Built for scalable deployment across rivers, lakes, ports, and industrial water systems, this platform presents an attractive commercial licensing opportunity for real-time environmental monitoring

Details of the Technology Offer

The platform utilizeshigh-sensitivity microwave resonance tracking to reliably separate hydrocarbon dielectric perturbations from background natural water chemistry. Powered by low-cost onboard electronics and battery storage, the floating device detects ultra-thin oil films (~140 µm) via resonant shifts exceeding 500 MHz while maintaining negligible baseline noise (<50 MHz). Unlike traditional visual or optical sensors, the unit operates seamlessly inall weather conditions, including darkness, heavy fog, and high surface water turbidity. When a spill is detected, the system processes reflection coefficient shifts in situ and instantly sends actionable telemetry to remote base stations or cloud networks.
