Many of the motors that drive two-wheel vehicles are what is called hub motors. They are mounted directly into the rear wheel. All of them currently available use rare earth magnets and copper windings. Ferrite magnets are less than one twentieth the cost of rare earth and aluminium is half the cost of copper. It is not possible to simply replace these materials with ferrite and aluminium without significant design changes and so far no one has found a way of doing this while maintaining performance and thermal behavior. This invention solves this problem and reduces the cost of these motors by around 30% .
The market size for motors of this type in the range of 1kW to 10kW is over 20 million per annum and growing at over 15% . The most obvious target markets are India, China, and Vietnam. The technology can be sold as a license based on production along with engineering services and materials.
It can be seen from the white papers above that this technology can be applied to any sort of motor with superficial studies showing that in almost all cases it can make economic sense.
The hub motor application has been studied in sufficient detail to be certain about the cost savings in both India and Vietnam. It has been simulated using advanced simulation tools and prototyping to ensure the performance matches that of the rare earth and copper equivalent with respect to torque speed and thermal behaviour. Vendors for aluminium winding and ferrite magnets have been identified and their costing applied to cost studies.
It is possible to identify an existing motor and create a design that will match its performance and move directly to production using the production machinery and processes already in place. It is also possible to create a new motor and identify all of the machinery needed to manufacture at scale without any risk.
