Prehistory in Equality: A Digital Platform for the Critical Evaluation of Prehistoric Children’s Literature

Summary of the technology

Prehistory in Equality is a web-based digital platform designed for the management and critical evaluation of illustrated children’s books about prehistory, with a special focus on gender role representation. The application addresses the need to correct traditional biases in prehistoric children’s literature through scientifically updated criteria. It is built on a modern client–server architecture, with a backend developed in Python using Flask and a frontend implemented with Angular and TypeScript. The technology enables structured data storage, content classification, qualitative evaluation of publications, and user and role management. It also incorporates automated processes for data collection and updating. As a fully web-accessible system, it requires no local installation or specific device dependencies. The platform ensures a secure, scalable, and maintainable environment. Its design makes it an effective tool for educational, cultural, and outreach contexts.

Details of the Technology Offer

The Prehistory in Equality technology has been developed by a multidisciplinary team consisting of two PhDs from the University of Burgos (UBU), with degrees in Computer Engineering and Humanities specializing in Historical Heritage, along with a recent Computer Engineering graduate from the same university. UBU hosts multiple research teams across diverse fields, fostering innovation and technology transfer. Through its Office for the Transfer of Research Results (OTRI), the university actively facilitates the transfer of knowledge from academia to companies and practical projects, ensuring a strong link between academic research and technological development. The team combines expertise in computing, education, heritage, and gender studies, positioning itself as a reference in the creation of inclusive and educational digital tools.

Children’s literature on prehistory often shows gender biases, minimizing women’s roles and perpetuating stereotypes. Existing tools catalog books by theme or age but do not assess social role representation or scientific accuracy. Prehistory in Equality fills this gap with a digital catalog that incorporates critical analysis and a gender equality perspective.

Applications

Prehistory in Equality is a web platform for cataloging, evaluating, and consulting children’s books on prehistory with a gender perspective. It is used in education, research, and cultural outreach, enabling the selection of inclusive and scientifically accurate resources. Its features include structured data storage, classification according to equality criteria, user and role management, and book evaluation. The technology combines a Python/Flask backend with an Angular/TypeScript frontend, accessible from any browser without local installation.

New and innovative aspects

The main innovation lies in integrating critical gender analysis and scientific criteria into a digital catalog for children’s literature, a feature not present in existing platforms. It also automates content updates through data collection processes and allows differentiated user role management, enabling collaborative participation by teachers, researchers, and families.

Main advantages of its use

The platform offers clear advantages over traditional catalogs by explicitly evaluating gender representation and scientific accuracy in books. It saves time in selecting materials, improves educational quality, and promotes inclusion and diversity in learning. Its web-based accessibility across multiple platforms and automated updates make it more efficient than current alternatives.
