Researchers at the University of Burgos have developed an adhesive based on a block copolymer linked by a photosensitive molecule that allows the adhesion of materials in multilayer packaging, commonly used in the packaging industry. When a physical stimulus, such as light, is applied, the adhesive loses its adhesive properties, facilitating the separation of the layers and improving the recyclability of the packaging.
New and innovative aspects
The adhesive developed incorporates a photosensitive organic molecule in a thermoplastic matrix, allowing effective adhesion throughout the life of the container and controlled separation at the end of its cycle. The inclusion of photosensitive molecules enables the precise activation of the delamination process by light, without compromising the packaging itself. Unlike conventional adhesives, which create permanent bonds, this dissociative adhesive facilitates the separation of layers and improves the recyclability of materials, thereby reducing the generation of plastic waste.
Main advantages of its use
The thermoplastic photosensitive adhesive offers multiple advantages compared to traditional adhesives:1. Its ability to facilitate the separation of the components of a multilayer packaging significantly improves recyclability, and therefore, waste reduction.2. Its formulation does not require the use of solvents or aggressive chemical processes for delamination.3. Its compatibility with plastic materials widely used in the packaging industry makes it a viable solution for a variety of commercial applications. 4. Being based on a block copolymer, with both polar and non-polar components, the adhesive allows precise control of adhesion by light excitation.
Specifications
The developed adhesive is based on a block copolymer with integrated photosensitive bonds, allowing selective deactivation by exposure to light at a specific wavelength.
Its formulation has been optimised to guarantee adequate mechanical strength, ensuring the integrity of the packaging during its shelf life. Inspired by previous studies, such as those carried out by K. Kaiser (Fraunhofer Institute) and the European Mandala project, this adhesive adapts the concepts of reversible adhesion to thermoplastic materials, opening up new possibilities in the field of recycling and reuse of multilayer packaging.
