Desired outcome
A leading company in the dental industry is seeking to identify and validate novel, intrinsically safer teeth whitening technologies to launch a best-in-class whitening kit for both pharmacy and e-commerce channels.
The successful solution must feature low or non-oxygen/peroxide release to minimize free radical exposure, operate at a safe, enamel-friendly pH (> 5.5), and guarantee a strict shelf-life stability of at least 30 months without compromising efficacy.
We are open to various business relationships, with a strong preference for:
- Finished product supply / Private label manufacturing
- Joint Development (specifically for highly promising T4-T5 technologies)
- Licensing and Exclusivity agreements
Background
While many current teeth whitening products deliver rapid results, they often rely heavily on peroxide-driven oxygen release. These mechanisms generate free radicals that can cause enamel damage and hypersensitivity. Alternatively, some products utilize highly acidic formulations (pH < 5.5) that require complex protective measures for the consumer.
Our goal is to overcome this industry compromise. We are looking for breakthrough formulations or active ingredients that deliver clinical efficacy comparable to current market leaders, but utilizing significantly safer, low-oxygen, or peroxide-free mechanisms.
Details of the Innovation Need
Must-Have Requirements
- Safety First (Low Free Radicals):The technology must be non-hydrogen peroxide-based or utilize significantly lower levels of peroxide to strictly minimize free radical generation and oxygen usage.
- Critical Stability & Shelf-Life: The formulation and its efficacy must remain completely stable for at least 30 months. This is a critical evaluation criterion. Submissions must prove that active ingredients and pH do not degrade over time (demonstrable via real-time or accelerated 6-month testing).
- pH Requirements: The formulation must maintain a strict, stable pH > 5.5 to ensure enamel safety.
- Efficacy Benchmarking:Submissions must demonstrate proven whitening efficacy in vitro and in vivo (targeting an improvement of roughly 9 tones within 7 days). Slightly lower efficacy (e.g., 1 tone less or requiring up to 12 days) is acceptable only if the technology offers zero oxygen release.
- PAP Specifications: If the formula utilizes PAP (Phthalimidoperoxycaproic acid), it must be present at a minimum concentration of 2%.
- Regulatory Compliance:The solution must fully comply with EU cosmetic regulatory requirements for convenient at-home consumer use.
- Maturity:The proposed solution must be at a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of > 5.
- Geographical Scope:Solutions must be commercially viable within Spain.
Nice-to-have
- Adjunct Synergies:The inclusion of adjunct technologies or devices (like LED lights or customized trays) and synergistic ingredients (like Hydroxyapatite) is highly welcome if they demonstrably enhance safety or efficacy.
- Cost Feasibility:Solutions must be cost-effective and highly feasible for a premium consumer retail price point.
Discarded solutions
- Unstable Formulations: Any formulation that fails to maintain a reliable pH > 5.5 over the required 30-month shelf life.
- Inconsistent Manufacturing: Solutions with limited stability data, poor batch-to-batch reproducibility, or inconsistent efficacy results.
- Whitening Strips: Due to historically low efficacy and poor consumer acceptance in our target market, strip formats are entirely out of scope.
Possible solution areas
