Summary of the technology

This is the advanced module on Aluminium of the Lightweighting Professional Course. It is addressed to professionals whose work involves planning the manufacture of lightweight products made of aluminium and alloys, and at employers who want to start manufacturing products based on lightweight concepts. In this module, the participants will be provided with the best properties, processing methods, applications, and challenges of magnesium, the ninth most abundant element in the universe.

The course will start on March 7, 2022 with a first meeting with the trainer. Then it will enter a self-paced phase of three weeks, where participants will work on EIT RawMaterials new learning platform. Finally, the course will conclude with a three-day online classroom training from March 30 to April 1, 2022.

Learning Objectives

After an introductory review of key properties of Aluminium and its alloys, and a summary of relevant application fields, this module will be able to:

  • identify the main processing routes (primary production, recycling, rolling, extrusion, casting) and apply the guidelines for alloys and processes selection.
  • realise the importance of welding and joining processes in several industrial application fields will be presented, as well as recall the challenging solutions offered by conventional and innovative surface finishing techniques.
  • understand the basic concepts to be adopted in quality control and evaluation will be described.
  • review the main techniques for process and properties modelling, and properly approach design methods and solutions suitable for Aluminium alloys.
  • analyse case studies on the development of Aluminium alloys components for lightweight, taking into account both rolled and/or extruded and cast components. All case studies will present the eco-sustainability potential associated with Aluminium alloys, taking advantage of life cycle analysis.

About EIT RawMaterials

Minerals, metals and advanced materials are key enablers to achieve the objectives of the European Green Deal. Today, only a fraction of the most relevant raw materials is produced in Europe. This can be changed through a circular economy approach, through innovation in recycling, substitution, processing, mining, and exploration. It is the objective of EIT RawMaterials to secure a sustainable raw materials supply by driving innovation, education, and entrepreneurship across European industrial ecosystems.

EIT RawMaterials is an Innovation Community within the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT).
