Summary of the technology

The main advantages provided by the invention are:
 Simplicity and reproducibility in the synthesis of the new compound, due to one step synthesis process with simultaneous addition of all reagents. It isn’t necessary the removal of CDs, and it hasn’t intermediate compounds between silica and CDs.
 It allows the access to VOCs without any post-treatment.
 Adaptability of the compound to the requirements of each sample collection devices, adjusting the grain size by milling and using appropriate sieves.
 Procedure cleaner, safer and more economic, since it reduces the generation of toxic waste and the risk of contamination of workers.
 Reduce analysis time since desorption of pollutants retained in the sample collection devices can be thermal.
 Retention of pollutants is more independent of environmental conditions than commercial devices.

Description of the tech for sale

In the sampling of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) in the atmosphere, different solid phases are used to retain the analytes of interest. However, the majority of such compounds presents problems of low retention and recovery of analytes, due to its volatilization loss, or chemical decomposition. Furthermore it is necessary a post-treatment of the sample to recover the VOCs. The main disadvantage of the solid phases comprising silica and cyclodextrins (CDs), is the requirement of an intermediate compound. It also required the removal of CDs to recover the analytes. These various steps involve a reduction in adsorption capacity. In the case of hygroscopic adsorbents such as silica gel, high humidity conditions can displace the contaminants retained. With some reactive gases can occur alteration of the analytes. Moreover such solid phases require toxic and contaminants compounds to carry out the desorption such as CS2. Researchers at the University of Valencia have developed a novel procedure for the synthesis of a new solid phase for the retention of VOCs, which allows effective and efficient collection of VOCs and recovery of the analytes for further analysis.

Specifications

This procedure is simple, it works in a short period of time and is more economic compared to known processes. The new microporous hybrid compound (based on silica and CDs), can be used as solid phase or to fill up sample collection devices of VOCs. Retention of contaminants has less dependence of environmental conditions (temperature and/or humidity) than commercial sample collection devices. Recoveries obtained make them suitable for the exposure evaluation to these contaminants in industrial fields. This invention provides an improved alternative to commercial sample collection devices present in the prior art as solid phases using silica gel or activated carbon.
