Details of the Technology Offer

Background:

Natural plant extracts contain valuable bioactive ingredients for human health. However, the hydrophilic nature of certain compounds in these extracts poses challenges in formulating them for effective delivery. Polyphenols, commonly found in plants, are water-soluble but have low solubility in lipids, hindering their absorption through cell membranes. This limits their bioavailability and structural stability, reducing their effectiveness in products. Phytosomes, developed as carriers using phospholipid bilayers, enhance the absorption and protection of bioactives, improving their bioavailability. While phytosomes have various applications in industries such as therapeutics and food, toxicological concerns arise due to the use of organic solvents in their preparation methods.

Benefits:

Zero toxic organic solvents and synthesized materials involved in the process; Eco-friendly, low cost, easily scalable and less time-consuming than conventional methods to obtain physiologically-compatible phytosomes; High encapsulation efficiency (> 90%) and reduced compound leakage; Improved physicochemical stability and protection of natural bioactive ingredients loaded into the phytosomes.

Potential comercial use/applications:

Pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and food industries: the phytosome-based delivery systems obtained can be developed into solid (powders, capsules, granules, pellets, tablets), semi-solid (creams, gels, ointments, pastes) and liquid (suspensions, lotions, syrups) compositions.
