Desired outcome

Fater is looking for partners able to solve technical challenges in order to develop a super absorbent polymer - SAP - material from sustainable sources with good fluid handling properties, able to replace the currently used raw material.
We are open to solutions that already have applications in adjacent fields, such as agriculture, anti-flood bags, food absorbent pad or other that could potentially be re-applied for our purposes.

Details of the Innovation Need

The main components of an absorbent disposable product are fluff and superabsorbent polymer (SAP). In particular, SAP is the main responsible for the optimal performance that an absorbent product must show, due to its characteristic ability to absorb liquid up to 40 times of its weight with a salt solution. Currently, the most widely used SAPs in this business are sodium polyacrylates, which are obtained petrochemically and therefore have a high environmental impact

We are looking for super-absorbent materials, whether polymers or hydrogels, that can lower the environmental impact of our current products. We are therefore looking for materials from renewable sources. The environmental impact will be evaluated in terms of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA).

We are open to solutions that already have applications in adjacent fields, such as agriculture, anti-flood bags, food absorbent pad that could potentially be re-applied for our purposes.

The most characterized parameters for the absorbent products for personal care on which we mainly focus are:

- Particle size distribution

- Retention capacity

- Absorption under pressure

- Speed of absorption

Such parameters are not mandatory for this preliminary search, they will be considered as target parameters in later development stages.
