Main Purpose:

Key deliverable is to drive global foods packaging sustainability agenda for R&D to support PepsiCo’s commitments to be RCB compliant by 2025 and reduce carbon footprint by 2030. This includes setting the material & equipment S&T agenda for R&D, partnering with the Office of Sustainability and significant industry interface to advance technical agenda, influence legislation and spark flexible packaging recovery infrastructure.  

Accountabilities:

  • This leadership position will have direct accountability to drive the Food technology and Stronger with Purpose agenda into successful global rollouts.
  • It will be a tremendous challenge to get up to speed quickly, develop new capability, establish linkages across the newly formed R&D organization and sell the innovative S&T across global sectors.
  • There are aggressive industry committed goals in both that require significant breakthrough packaging technology that will be challenged to be both financially viable and compatible with PEP infrastructure/culture
  • Lead and Execute Packaging SWP agenda to deliver innovation for Sustainability projects for all Global markets 
  • Key stakeholder with the Office of Sustainability
  • Dictate R&D agenda and spend of upstream suppliers against technology for PepsiCo of around $48MM.
  • Provide leadership, capability development and career guidance for direct reports and overall global packaging innovation team located in multiple sites worldwide while managing a G&A budget of $8MM.
  • Translate regional goals and business strategy into technical packaging projects 
  • Influence MKT team positively regarding packaging benefits and opportunities
  • Discovery of new global technologies and materials sources in order to define a pipeline of differentiated packaging solutions to drive productivity, sustainability and innovation programs Globally 
  • Serve as Global packaging “R&D Sustainability COE” providing technical expertise (Formats, technology, materials), best practices , guidelines and analytical support for the region, working in collaboration with Global Innovation team, as well as with local teams to deliver capability, packaging harmonization, complexity reduction and flawless Innovation implementation 
  • Be fully conversant with the latest packaging technologies and initiatives to leverage relevant benefits and opportunities for the consumer and Pepsico.
  • Identify, analyze and improve existing packaging and processes to drive continuous improvement programs and competitive advantage for the business
  • Significant external industry influence to further drive our agenda.

Qualifications/Requirements

Minimum Requirements: 

  • BS in Engineering/Science in a relevant field, ie Chemistry or Chemical Engineering. 
  • 20+ years R&D innovation experience with 10+ years management experience. 
  • Demonstrated mastery of packaging materials, polymer science, consumer sensory testing methodologies, packaging equipment technologies, strong business/financial analysis capabilities. Exceptional communication, data analysis, selling and decision making skills – must have effective influence through “C” level execs globally.
  • Industry best in class combination of technical, business and leadership skills needed to drive invention and development of competitively advantaged packaging innovation globally across a wide range of markets, packaging suppliers, operational technologies and socio-economic conditions.
  • A mastery of both technical and business expertise and a working knowledge of market requirements to develop globally applicable solutions.
  • Lead cross-functional agenda from concept through first line demonstration and support rollout definition/transfer.
