Job Title: R&D Eng Principal Engineer

Duties: Apply fundamental and creative engineering principles, including heat and mass transfer, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and simulation and modeling, to develop novel process solutions (snack cooking, forming, drying, frying operations), and invent novel technical solutions (new technological platforms to process shelf-stable snack products, time & cost effective extrusion equipment designs to expedite innovation) for multi-regional deployment within PepsiCo. Work on multi-year programs developing breakthrough product and associated process designs to deliver new textures, shapes, sensory experiences (requiring cross-discipline engineering and food science collaboration) from local pilot to commercial scales internationally. Design and install pilot scale equipment necessary to demonstrate the advantages of new processes technologies and create innovative possibilities. Define new capital requirements, specify unit operation performance criteria, and qualify new installations at commercial scale. Lead global brand stewardship to maximize the scale advantages for PepsiCo’s existing businesses, maintaining market leadership. Lead overall agenda for projects, including developing new snack products, driving manufacturing capital and expense cost savings, driving human sustainability and health, creating new ways of agile development and time savings, and setting technical guidelines, timelines, and budgeting. Leverage external and internal experts for key scientific, analytical, and sensory research. Perform basic economic evaluations on new processes and estimate the potential business value. Partner externally to source ingredients and food processing equipment, as well as leverage vendor expertise to implement new technologies. Participate as an active member of cross-functional business development teams comprised of individuals from a variety of disciplines, including Operations, Purchasing, Engineering and Regional R&D teams to scale successful processes to commercial production scale. Lead the identification, assessment, validation and commercialization of new products and technologies. Design and execute experiments to develop new snack products, new snack extrusion cooking & forming technologies, and improve positive nutritional quality of snack products to analyze and interpret data to make sound technical recommendations on product and process issues. Provide technical and business risk assessment or perspective and mitigation plans related to new product and process development.

Qualifications/Requirements

Job Requirements: Bachelor’s degree (U.S. or foreign equivalent) in Food Science, Chemical Engineering, Biology or related and ten (10) years of experience in the job offered or related role OR Master’s degree (U.S. or foreign equivalent) in Food Science, Chemical Engineering, Biology or related and seven (7) years of experience in the job offered or related role. Must have three (3) years of experience with: product-process commercialization, optimization, and productivity; and developing research plans and uncovering insights from data to formulate technical solutions for developing new snack products and associated new food extrusion technologies. Must have two (2) years of experience with: food extrusion technologies, such as twin screw, single screw, die expanded, disk expanded, and cold forming for commercial applications in Consumer Package Goods (CPG); and food extrusion science and engineering principles, including rheology, mass & heat transfer, metallurgy, thermodynamics, fluid flow modeling, dehydration, starch & protein chemistry, simulation & modeling. Must have one (1) year of experience with: leading technical communities of practice, such as global teams active in practice of food extrusion to develop new snack products and enable organizational collaboration and technical knowledge building; working with Global programs and teams across new food products development, snacks extrusion process technology innovation, and snacks extrusion process capital productivity; and leading projects from local pilot to commercial scales internationally for extruded snack products. Travel required up to 25% of the time.
