I am a Co-Executive Director of a 501(c)3 organization that seeks to use food to bring the community full circle. We have partnered with well-known Personal Chef and healthy food advocate Anthony Thomas on this effort as the Executive Chef of the Program. The program allows young people to be educated on the basic life skill of being able to prepare a meal for themselves. All demonstrations consist of instruction and guidance from Chef Anthony allowing young people to become familiar and comfortable cooking. While Chef instructs youth on cooking, at the same time, youth are engaged with conversations on important topics surrounding their life, dreams, aspirations, fears, etc. The program would conclude with participants receiving the ingredients to the meal Chef demonstrated how to cook. The lesson is to teach youth/families to prepare meals on their own and then use the ingredients to prepare the same meal at home sometime later that week. We’ve always known that food can bring people together. Our organization is using healthy food options to connect with the community. Current Company Goal: Fundraising to establish the 1st community kitchen in Southern DC to positively impact food entrepreneurs and enabling us to get healthy food options to residents.
