Academic Studies (1)

Ph.D

University Department Of Technology (UDCT)

January 1992 - January 1996

Organic Chemistry

Thesis : "Synthesis of Heterocyclic Disperse Dyes”
Research Advisor: Prof. S. Seshadri
Research work laid emphasis on the synthesis of heterocycles and other useful intermediates like, Benzo[b]thien-3-(2H)-ylidenecyanoacetate,S,S-dioxide, 3- aryl-2- methyl-6-nitro-4(3H)-quinazolinone, o-Chlorobenzoylacetic ester.
The chromophoric potential of these economically viable intermediates was exploited by subjecting them to a variety of synthetic transformations via the classical Knovenagel, Vilsmeier-Haack, Friedel-Crafts arylation, Gewald, Hantzsch’s and Diazotization reactions. Structural elucidation via modern spectroscopic techniques (IR, FTNMR) was an inherent part of the research. Application Testing, colour properties of the dyes in solution as well as on polyester were studied. Disperse dyes were assessed for pick up, sublimation and light fastness by application on polyester by the HTHP dyeing process.
The doctorate research resulted in four single author papers and a review in internationally peer reviewed journals [Color. Technol; 120 (3) (2004) 101-107; Synthetic Communications; 35 (7) (2005); Org. Prep and Procedures Intl; 36(2) (2004)170- 173; Dyes & Pigments; 62 (1) (2004) 83- 92; Color. Technol; 120(4) (2004) 151-155]
