Universidad de Alicante posted this:New procedure for the elimination of printed ink from plastic filmThe most innovative aspects of this technology are: • The process for the removal of the ink is completely innovative and ecological, because it does not use organic solvents. • The technology has been successfully tested on different plastics, such as Polythene, Polypropylene, Polyester and Polyamide. It is viable for both water and solvent based inks.

As well as their use as substitutes for the addition of sulfur dioxide in wines or other food products. The chitosan films have many applications due to their antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. The limitation in their use is that chitosan is soluble in acidic aqueous media. Despite the numerous applications of chitosan, was never described the production of chitosan with natural compounds that are stable in acidic and with high antioxidant activity, maintaining the antimicrobial activity of chitosan. Has never been reported the use of chitosan as a substitute of the addition of sulfur dioxide in wines or other food products, pharmaceutical or other related areas.
Universidad de Alicante posted this:Novel visual inspection system for quality control in production procesessVisual inspection systems are based on the employment of pictures, both in the visible and infrared or ultraviolet spectrums. They can also make use of sonar images or adding structured light to the environment in order to analyze defects and shapes in products. The figure shows an image obtained by means of a range camera that allows distinguishing an object by its depth. Thus, its position and defects can be determined through its volume. The technology is totally developed and has been laboratory and field tested, although, it requires a particular specification for each case. The technology can be used for real-time inspection of production processes, both for the recognition and for the classification and quality inspection.

The technique also permits the quantitative analysis of almost all the congeners of dioxins and furans (more than 130 different compounds), not only the main 17 toxic compounds. The technique could be applied to different fields: gaseous emissions from the combustion, characterization of hazardous and toxic wastes, determination in food and feed, determination in sewage sludges and other organic fertilizers, determination in other matrices such as tissues and blood, air, emission due to the traffic, paper, ink, hygienic materials, tobacco smoke, chimney soot, dust… Innovative aspects: − The know-how involves the ability to measure a very low concentration of dioxins (values close to picograms or femtograms). It does not depend on the precise equipment but the expertise in preparing properly the samples by means of a very sensitive and specific analytical method. − The technique also permits the quantitative analysis of almost all the congeners of dioxins and furans (more than 130 different compounds), not only the main 17 toxic compounds. − Nowadays, this methodology (standard one) is the only one available method to carry out reliable dioxin analyses.
Universidad de Alicante posted this:Novel method to increase production and extraction of phytosterolsThe research group "Proteomics and functional genomics of plants of the University of Alicante has developed a new procedure that increases the production and extraction of phytosterols in plant cell cultures in vitro. To do this, is added to the culture medium cyclodextrins and optionally methyl jasmonate. After growing under certain conditions, phytosterols are obtained with yields higher than the current extraction techniques from the plant material. This method allows a stable production of phytosterols, independent of geographical, seasonal and environmental factors, with reduced spaces requirements and easier process of purification and industrial scaling. The group is looking for companies interested in acquiring the technology for commercial exploitation. Innovative aspects Nowadays, the classical method of extracting phytosterols from vegetable raw materials has a very low yield. This, combined with the large amount of plant material needed to extract a significant amount of phytosterols from global natural sources (only could be supplied 10% of Western populations), causes a high cost of these products. With this new process of in vitro plant cell culture, it is possible to increase production and efficiency of extraction of phytosterols from natural resources for a greater percentage of the population that could benefit from the positive effects of phytosterols on health.

Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas posted this:Cebas 57Apricot is a stone fruit species with a long history of cultivation in Spain. Nevertheless, traditional varieties that have served remarkably well in past decades are now struggling to respond to new demands, both relative to cultivation and the market. The spread of the sharka virus (Plum pox virus) in production areas among trees that are not resistant as well as the demand for fruit with characteristics that traditional varieties do not possess have increased efforts to develop new varieties. CEBAS- CSIC of Murcia has played a key role in this process by developing an apricot breeding programme. This programme has obtained a number of new cultivars that largely meet the current demands.
