Universidad de Alicante posted this:Solar energy use for water potabilization by electrodialysisA Spanish research group owns the know-how for the desalination of saline water for human consumption or irrigation by means of systems of electrodialysis powered by photovoltaic solar energy. The main advantages are that it is non-polluting and has a low maintenance cost. The technology is fully developed and useful for organisations dealing with water supply problems. A partner to set up the electrodialysis-photovoltaic system in its facilities and/or carry out feasibility studies is sought. Innovative aspects: The desalination system makes use of renewable energy, so it is respectful with the environment and not contributing to the climatic change. Desalination system for remote areas with access to saline reservoirs, where the supply of electricity is particularly expensive or even non-existent, or for coastal zones where there are saline aquifers and the hydric resources are scarce.

However, all of them have serious disadvantatges. 1) with software that uses atom-atom potentials: Advantages: fast and capable of working with large molecules. Disadvantages: the "blind tests" carried out by the "Cambridge Crystallographic Data Centre" are giving a 50% maximum success in the predictions. 2) with software based on DFT calculations: Advantages: good results Disadvantages: they are computationally very slow, so they are only used for very simple molecules compared with drug molecules. In addition, they have errors predicting van der Waals interactions and weak hydrogen bridges if not corrected empirically. 3) with software using ad hoc potentials for each molecule obtained from systematic exploration of the surface potential of intermolecular interactions: Advantages: efficient and faster. Disadvantages: some potentials should be calculated for each molecule studied, which are complex and slow, and is not general. The approach presented here is new and unique because the potential Pixel has never been used before for drawing polymorphic predictions and it has shown to present the advantages of all the alternatives combined. This is the first research group which has brought the potential Pixel to this level of calculation. The potential calculations and the applicability of the methode based on pixels have the same quality that the sophisticated ab initio based potential calculations. Besides, this is much faster than DFT (Functional-Based Theory)-based and ad hoc potentials ..

The employment of this culture medium increases the production yield of ethanol and hydrogen, in comparison with that obtained from the use of other sources of carbon. The effect of optimizing the culture medium is to reduce the costs and save energy in the industrial-scale fermentation process. No other alternative culture media exist that have been formulated and optimized for E. coli that would allow greater production yields of ethanol to be obtained. It represents a simple and attractive way of producing hydrogen and ethanol from a carbon source of low price and in plentiful supply. The high degree of reduction of the glycerine, in comparison with sugars, allows reduced chemical compounds such as succinate, xylitol, propionate, hydrogen and others to be obtained.

Among these enhancements we must remark the use of several meteorological models with the regression models simultaneously and new training methods for the regression systems.

Gheode group has developed a series of algorithms that consider in a much more realistic way the designing of parks, having in addition a great versatility to incorporate improvements or made-to-measure expansions for every client in particular.
Universidad de Alcalá-OTRI posted this:Using artificial intelligence to shorten the time in the wind turbine design process.Nowadays, aerodynamic industry makes use of exclusively customary techniques over the different stages composing the design process. These techniques require some computing time (depending on the accuracy provided), which bounds the number of different designs that can be taken into account. By reducing that time through the use of new methods in artificial intelligence, it is possible increasing the amount of considered designs.

Brunel University London posted this:DRooTES: Double Rooted Trailing Edge Serrations for quiet bladesAerofoil blade designs with double rooted serrations that reduce trailing edge noise to the maximum through destructive interference. They can be attached to existing blades so are particularly suitable for retrofitting to larger blades, such as wind turbines. They are however applicable to a wide range of blades moving in air and water, for example turbines, fans, rotary wings and fixed wings. The scale of application ranges from small drones (small blades operating at high speeds) to large wind turbines (large blades operating at slower speeds).

Brunel University has developed a viable and realistic active wing/blade twist technology with an adaptive skin for seamless and adjustable changes in wing/blade twist angle. The technology is the ability to maintain a rigid skin with a low drag (smooth surface finish) despite high twist deformation during operation. Moreover, the structure is lightweight, and strong enough to carry aerodynamic loads.

Brunel University London posted this:Zagblade: Reduction of aero acoustic pollution by introducing novel serrated trailing edgesAn aerofoil blade design that reduces trailing edge noise by means of a saw-tooth serration filled with a porous material. The serration and porous material work constructively with each other to significantly improve the aero-acoustic performance. An optimal choice of the porous materials has been identified, where it can achieve broadband noise reduction whilst completely suppressing the vortex shedding tone. This new device is more industrially-ready than the conventional “add-on” type serration due to its superior structural integrity. In addition it produces an aerodynamic performance similar to that of the baseline aerofoil. Applicable to a wide range from applications from drones, UAVs, aircraft engines, wind turbines and fan blades.
