University of Vigo posted this:New sustainable adsorbent for bleaching efficient industrial effluentsMany industries, such as those belonging to the textile, wine, and paper industry, consume huge volumes of water and, as a result, generate a large amount of contaminated water containing persistent colour pollutant compounds. These compounds represent an environmental and health threat due to their well-known associated problems, such as carcinogenicity, toxicity and mutagenicity. Furthermore, they entail a great environmental impact when discharged in aquatic environments, perceptible at very low concentrations, creating an undesirable visual impact, which, in many cases, does not meet the degree of conformity under the current directives on the wastewater treatment for industrial effluents (Directive 91/271 / EEC). The solution proposed by the research group Chemical Engineering at the University of Vigo, is the use as adsorbent of peat, or a similar lignocellulosic material, immobilized in calcium alginate beads. This process is efficient, cheap and environmentally friendly, unlike other processes and technologies. In fact, the utilization of peat instead of activated carbon as industrial adsorbent has the advantage that peat requires no activation, unlike activated carbon, reducing operating costs. In addition, the low cost of the adsorbent would be translated into significant economic benefits. Moreover, depending on the contaminant removed from the waste effluent, the exhausted adsorbent may be used as soil fertilizer at its end of life.

A two-step curing process, which consists in an Aza-Michael addition at room temperature, followed by UV radical polymerization of acrylates or methacrylates amine formulations without the need of adding solvents. The presence of amines in the structure suppress the radical inhibition by oxygen, which is a typical drawback in radical polymerizations. The invention allows leading the curing in two separate stages with a stable intermediate material, being the process controlled by the amount of amine in the formulation.
Universidad de Alicante posted this:Novel and simple procedure for dispersing graphene derivatives in chemically curable resins.The Laboratory of Adhesion and Adhesives of the University of Alicante and the company Dental Global Training, have developed a new procedure to incorporate efficiently graphene derivatives (nanofibers, nanosheets, nanoparticles) in chemically cured resins by using an in situ polymerization technique. The method is very simple and fast, it provides an excellent dispersion of the graphene derivatives in both the solid components of the resin and in the cured polymer matrix, and is entirely friendly with the environment. The novel method does not require the use of organic solvents nor water, ultrasounds, and high pressure/temperature. The resulting resin composites show excellent mechanical properties, good wear resistance, easy manipulation and increase the insolubility in oral fluids, and therefor they have special interest in applications in odontology, traumatology and non-medical applications too (automobile, construction, civil engineering, aeronautics, space engineering, electronics and optics). It is looking for companies interested in acquiring this technology for its commercial exploitation.

The process removes the polymer matrix, recovering glass fiber which can be reused. The process is not aggressive with fiberglass. It takes place at room temperature and is able to recover all the fiberglass used. The method is industrially scalable and can be automated. Fiberglass composites and resin are widely used in the construction of boat hulls, tanks, wind turbine blades and many other applications. This method is a very important innovation for the sector and there was no effective method that allowed recovering and reusing these materials.

The new foam is composed of two separate liquid components that can be mixed in a two-body syringe in such a way that the foaming time can be modulated for allowing the foam formation at the end of the syringe needle. The new polymeric foam can self-expanded and self-modelated for avoiding complications in open internal cavities caused by infections, blooding, fistulae, dyspnea or sepsis. The new foam is easily applicable, safe for biological tissues, and its use avoid the use of the current aggressive treatments in pleural cavities. It is looking for companies interested in acquiring this technology for its commercial exploitation.

All kind of organic compunds are removed (biodegradable and non biodegradable ones). The catalyst life is around 2-3 years. It is an exothermic process, so the energy needed for the process is just for the start up. The process works at 250-350ºC.
