Spanish National Research Council posted this:Energy harvesting from ambient vibrations for wireless sensors applicationResearchers from the Spanish National Research Council at the Barcelona Microelectronics Institute (IMB-CNM) have recently developed a mechanical energy harvesting device by using a low-cost microelectronic fabrication process. The device acts as an electrical generator and is driven by environmentally-available mechanical energy such as ambient vibrations. Due to its flexibility and small size, it is of easy integration as power generator permitting the provision of full power autonomy to any wireless sensor node during its lifecycle into a network infrastructure following the philosophy “install and forget”. Industrial partners are being sought to exploit the existing know-how through a patent license agreement.

The compounds exhibit high activity and selectivity for the Leishmania parasite, and they provide a new therapeutic tool for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. The group seeks pharmaceutical companies to reach licensing agreements or collaboration and commercial agreements with technical assistance.

They are metal complexes belonging to the first transition groups (groups 4-6) and elements from the main groups (groups 1,2 and 13). Its application is aimed at the synthesis of materials with new properties (silicon polymers, biodegradable plastics, polyesters) and the production of small molecules with high added value, used as starting products in many industrial processes (epoxides, silanes). The group is looking for manufacturing agreements and joint venture agreements with companies from the agrofood industry, construction and petrochemicals.

It is also known the presence of this compound in contaminated civil areas arisen from older military installations, or even from terrorist attacks. This causes both health and environmental problems. In order to meet this need we have developed new colorimetric, simple, rapid and cheap colorimetric sensor for the in situ detection of trace amounts of TNT by non-specialized personnel and by conventional techniques sensors (replacing the commonly known IMS, GC, HPLC).

This new process consists in the oxidation of the sulfoxide with air in the presence of a molibdenum compound as catalyst, preferentially dioxomolibdenum (VI) bis(acetilacetonate) or dinuclear derivatives coming from its partial hydrolisis.

The products obtained show excellent yields. It should be noted that this new method uses an easily available and non-toxic reducing agent that generates non-toxic byproducts which are easily separated from the amine synthesized.

The offer includes also peptide and protein bacteriocins produced by S. pseudintermedius Sp222. These bacteriocins exhibit a broad spectrum of biological activities: - bacteriocin BacSp222 is able to kill a variety of Gram+ bacteria strains, including the methicillin resistant S. aureus (MRSA) strain. It is also cytotoxic towards selected eukaryotic cells and is resistant to action of proteolytic enzymes (either eukaryotic or prokaryotic) as well as to high temperature. The biological activity of BacSp222 is sustained even after limited fragmentation of its molecule by chemical reagents; - lysostaphin Sp222 has an ability to effectively lyse (and, in consequence, to kill) the cells of Gram+ bacteria.

The method consists of the protein extraction from the olive seeds using a previously developed process, and digest the extracted proteins with Thermolysin enzyme, allowing to obtain peptides with antihypertensive capacity in vitro, or with Alcalase enzyme leading to obtain a peptide extract with antioxidant properties. The group seeks to establish commercial , licensing or collaboration agreements with companies of the food and pharmaceutical sectors interested in both the use strategy of this waste material (olive pits), as in the use of the found bioactive peptides.
DIT Hothouse posted this:iSeal: Advanced Surface Treatment for Protection against TribocorrosionThis invention is based on the application of a hybrid organic/inorganic treatment onto an exposed surface – either as a stand-alone treatment or as a sealant. The treatment is applied using an electrochemical deposition technique, allowing for the development of conformal coatings, irrespective of design complexity. Layer thicknesses are low (10-100nm) but resistance in corrosive marine environments indicate corrosion rates comparable to technologies currently employed by the aerospace and automotive industries. Corrosion rates are reduced by between 103 and 105 times, dependant on the nature of the porous coating. Tests on metallic coatings indicated a reduction in corrosion rates of approximately 103-104 while tests on ceramic coatings indicated a reduction in corrosion rates of approximately 105. By applying the hybrid treatment as a sealant treatment onto a porous wear resistant coating, concerns regarding the effect of mechanical damage are dramatically reduced. In addition, surface roughness levels are similar to electropolished finishes.
