Summary of the technology

The invention provides new crosslinked copolymers derived from ninhydirin, and their use, in film, membrane or gel form, as chromogenic sensors in the presence of amino acids, small proteins or peptides present in aqueous samples, wounds, wound exudates, biological samples and medical samples.

The capable of colour change of the new sensors in the presence of healing parameters allows monitoring the evolution of chronic wounds using RGB parameters of a digital photograph, anticipating the diagnosis and treatment of patients.

New and innovative aspects

The difficulties of healing of skin wounds is a problem of the first magnitude that affects approximately 1-2% of the population and the great harm to patients, while it represents an enormous economic cost.

The healing process is complex, and the diagnosis and treatment of chronic wounds is challenging. Medical staff perform these evaluations through visual inspections to establish treatments that can last for long periods of time.

This monitoring technology based on the quantitative detection of healing parameters is a great advance in the realization of preventive diagnoses, control of infections in real time, reduction of the additional response time of the sanitary economic cost.

Main advantages of its use

The main advantage is the ability to detect healing markers such as protease, amino acids, small proteins or peptides present in aqueous and/or biological media, by means of a simple color change quickly, without prior manipulation, and without interference.

Specifications

The synthesis of the structure (I) derived from ninhydrin within the polymeric material itself, by means of direct modification in the polymer chains, allows obtaining a stable material for years without any type of storage or special treatment.

Applications

This development allows the detection, quantification and monitoring of chronic wounds by using the RGB parameters of a digital photograph. The chronic wound monitoring device can reduce the number of infections of patients, decrease prolonged hospitalizations, to follow the evolution of the patients after being discharged from hospital and reduce laboratory tests associated with the diagnosis of chronic wounds.
