Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic inflammation of the GI tract. It is estimated that over one million people are affected by IBD in the United States alone, and it accounts for $6.3 billion of direct health cost in the US. The cannabis plant produces numerous secondary metabolites including cannabinoids and terpenes, which are known for their therapeutic effect. It is well established that extracts from raw cannabis are more potent than specific purified synthetic cannabinoids due to the various active molecules that act synergistically. IBD patients in many countries around the world are eligible for prescription of medical cannabis.

Our Innovation

The goal of this research is to determine which specific composition of cannabinoids demonstrates the greatest ameliorating and therapeutic effect. The research platforms to demonstrate this putative effects are in vitro in human and rodents cell lines and in an in vivo mice model of IBD, aiming to achieve standardization and consistency of the treatment formulation.


We will assess the effects of cannabinoids extracted from cannabis by several unique methodologies in IBD models. We will analyze the cannabinoid and terpene content in those extracts and determine the combination, proportion and minimal number of cannabinoids to achieve the greatest effect.


The researcher is seeking funding to utilize a unique approach in extracting cannabinoids and identify the most effective combinations to mimic whole extract potency for IBD treatment.
