Summary of the technology

A Novel Ethylene Antagonist to Improve Quality and Storability of Fresh Produce
Project ID : 8-2007-1799

Description of the technology

New, water-soluble cyclopropene extends storage and shelf life of agricultural products

Categories

Agriculture, post-harvest

Development Stage

Presently applicable for cut flowers and certain fruits and vegetables

Highlights

  • Extends harvest season of crops, herbs and leafy vegetables
  • Delays abscission and senescence, prolonging the vase-life of cut flowers, and the shelf life of other vegetable tissues
  • Can be sprayed in the field, plantation, or green house, or dip-loaded into cut flowers
  • Effective as both pre- and post-harvest treatment

Our Innovation

  • Provides a stable, water-soluble cyclopropene derivative
  • Eeffective inhibitor of ethylene-induced adverse responses in agricultural crops
  • Delays peel color change in fruits and vegetables: Banana peel de-greening at least by 12 days, color change of ‘Hass’ avocado fruit by at least five days
  • Prolongs vase-life of carnation and petunia cut flowers by at least 14 days, as well as delays abscission of citrus leaf explants by at least seven days

The Opportunity

  • Novel water soluble cyclopropene derivative, which is a potent inhibitor of ethylene action
  • Addresses agricultural market’s need to extend storage and shelf life as well as shipping time of fresh produce

Development Milestones

  • Conduct further research to facilitate better peel penetration of the inhibitor into certain fruits, like avocados and bananas.
