Our Innovation

This invention consists of novel and highly improved antifouling materials which spontaneously self-assemble into films and thus promote or encourage adherence of cells.

Advantages

  • An antifouling agent capable of preventing or arresting adsorption of organic and/or bio-organic materials to a surface and at the same time capable of promoting and encouraging attachment of cells to the surface.
  • Compounds are selected to self-assemble into films.

Application

The physical, chemical and biochemical properties of implant surfaces are some of the most important issues in the design of biomedical devices, as the first interaction between the implant and the body occurs at the interface.

In the case of bacteria, biofouling leads to the formation of a well-defined bacterial network - biofilm. Biofilm formation on medical devices and implants leads to severe infection which may result in patient death.

Technology

The materials of the invention are capable of attracting cells from multicellular organisms and preventing antifouling by unicellular organisms. The materials of the invention can be used in biotechnological processes with any eukaryotic cells including mammalian cells or plant cells.

Opportunity

The invention provides a method for preventing, ameliorating, or treating a disease or disorder related to an implant having been placed in a body cavity or on a tissue. The invention provides a method for prolonging the lifetime of an implant and for stimulating or encouraging bone healing or absorption of an implant after implantation.
