Summary of the technology

Floating Sustained Release Delivery systems of Polyphenols
Project ID : 6-2009-2215

Description of the technology

Enables prolonged retention of polyphenols in the stomach

Oral drug delivery, Sustained release, Formulation

Development Stage

In vitro proof of concept

Patent Status

Provisional patent filed in the United States

Dietary polyphenols play a role in the prevention of degenerative diseases, particularly cardiovascular diseases and cancers

  • Diets rich in polyphenols have health benefits due to their antioxidant activity, but the absorption of polyphenols in humans is limited
  • It appears that the major site for polyphenols activity is the stomach and the intestine and there is therefore a need to increase the retention of an oral dosage form in the stomach
  • An approach to retaining an orally delivered drug in the stomach for a long time above its absorption site is the floating drug delivery system assuring a slow delivery of the drug.
  • Sustained delivery floating dosage form was shown to deliver polyphenols for 6-8 hours

Our Innovation

  • The floating delivery system consists of a tablet which will be floated on top of the stomach contents and enabling the controlled release of polyphenols over a period of up to 8 hours.

Key Features

  • Floating sustained release delivery systems are retained in the gastric system for 2-8 hours
  • Assures slow delivery of the drug to the target site
  • Provides increased and more reproducible bioavailability
  • Increases the efficacy of the therapy for various nutritional and/or pathological stomach conditions and improves patient compliance

Development Milestones

  • Checking antibacterial activity of various polyphenols
